Market Research as a core teaching component helps in bridging the gap between academia and real-world application. Thus, integrating this as part of the learning process, Interior Design students of GDP III Semester and PGDP I Semester from Apeejay Institute of Design (AID) were engaged in hands-on learning experiences, focusing on hardware and various furniture finishes respectively.

Students explored the latest design trends, materials, and finishing techniques, gaining valuable insights into industry standards. Garima J.Saini, Assistant Professor at AID, mentioned, “Understanding real-time applications equips them with knowledge that enhances their design capabilities and fosters industry readiness. The visits are part of an evolving teaching methodology that emphasises design refinements and detailed manipulations for realistic and functional solutions.”

Sharing Interior design student Akshita Dalal, “Exploring markets and researching different materials is an integral part of our syllabus. During our market research on hardware, we explored different types of hinges and locks and saw many options and varieties available in the store. We were briefed about different types of hardware used in furniture and doors in the class, before being sent to the market.” She further added,   “To see the real objects we could relate and can understand the application of this hardware in the market. We checked various companies and brands, which helped us understand the quality differences and how prices vary between them. This research made us realise how important it is to have the knowledge and experience of the market as this awareness directly connected us with the functionality of the design. We look forward to such visits and research in the market.”

Exploring different finishes on furniture,Himanshi Rawat-PGDP-Ist sem, Interior Design, “We students of AID from PGDP-Ist sem wanted to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Institute and our respected director ma’am for giving us the opportunity to visit Kotla Market, for various furniture finishes research. This market research has not only enhanced our theoretical knowledge but also provided us with practical insights into the industry. We identified various furniture like laminate, Duco, PU and various new laminates like Bamboo and Metal brushed finishes. We were able to see first-hand the latest trends and products, which will greatly benefit our future endeavours.”
