Instagram introduces AI-Powered editing tools for stories

Instagram has rolled out new AI-powered editing tools that enable users to enhance photos and videos directly within Stories without relying on external apps. The feature allows users to simply type text prompts to add, remove, or modify visual elements, making the creative process faster and more intuitive.

Previously, such editing capabilities were limited to Meta’s AI chatbot. However, the integration into Stories now brings seamless accessibility. Users can explore these tools under the “Restyle” menu by tapping the paintbrush icon. From there, they can choose between “add,” “remove,” or “change” options to instruct the AI on desired edits. Meta explained that users can ask the AI to alter hair colour, add accessories such as crowns, or even replace a background with a scenic sunset.

Additionally, Instagram provides preset effects to transform appearances or apply artistic styles. Users can add elements like sunglasses or a biker jacket, or apply creative filters such as a watercolour effect. For videos, visual effects like falling snow or animated flames can be introduced with a single command.

To use the feature, users must agree to Meta’s AI Terms of Service, which allow the company to analyse and process uploaded visuals, including facial features, for AI-driven edits and content generation.

The update is part of Meta’s broader expansion of AI features across its platforms. Recently, the company began testing “Write with Meta AI,” a tool that helps users craft engaging comments on Instagram posts. It also launched “Vibes,” an AI-generated video feed within the Meta AI app.

According to analytics firm Similarweb, Meta’s AI initiatives have significantly boosted engagement. Daily active users of the Meta AI app grew to 2.7 million on iOS and Android as of October 17, up from about 775,000 a month earlier.
