Geography as a subject can spark interest in fields like cartography, environmental science, international relations, and more. Developing a sense of India’s diverse geography, its vastness, and the regions that define its borders can foster a stronger connection to the nation’s heritage and identity.
Exploring the southern, eastern, and westernmost points introduces students to various ecosystems, climate patterns, and geographical features unique to those regions. This understanding contributes to discussions about biodiversity and climate change.
Many of these points hold historical and cultural importance. Let’s explore them

Ghuar Moti: The westernmost point of India is marked by the small inhabited village of Ghuar Moti, situated in the Kutch District of Gujarat. This village holds the distinction of being the furthest west within the country’s geographical boundaries. Its location places it along the coastline of the Arabian Sea, providing stunning views of the ocean and the horizon.
The village is known for its remote and picturesque setting, making it an intriguing destination for travelers and those interested in geographical landmarks. The region is characterised by its arid landscape and unique cultural heritage, which reflects the diverse tapestry of India. While Ghuar Moti itself might not be widely recognised, its position as the westernmost point of India grants it a significant place on the map, symbolising the nation’s vast and varied geography.
Kibithu: Also spelled as Kibithoo, stands as the easternmost location within India. This town is nestled in the Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh. Perched near the border with China, Kibithu offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountainous terrain and lush landscapes. Its remote location adds to its allure, attracting adventurers and those intrigued by geographical landmarks.
The town’s proximity to international borders underscores its strategic significance in terms of security and diplomacy. Kibithu not only serves as a remarkable geographical landmark but also provides a glimpse into the rich cultural and natural heritage of the region.
Kanyakumari: It is the southernmost point of the Indian mainland, a place where the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean converge, offering a breathtaking natural spectacle. This iconic destination in Tamil Nadu holds cultural and spiritual significance, with the Vivekananda Rock Memorial being a notable landmark.

On the other hand, Indira Point claims the distinction of being the southernmost point of land situated on the Great Nicobar Island. This remote and lush island, part of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, marks the extremity of the country’s geography. Due to its isolated location, Indira Point also underscores the ecological diversity and vulnerability of these regions.
Indira Col: It is the northernmost point of India. Named after the former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, the Indira Col stands as a mountain pass of significant altitude, positioned at 5,764 meters. It finds its place on the Indira Ridge, nestled within the formidable Siachen Muztagh of the Karakoram Range. This rugged and inhospitable terrain is situated in the northernmost reaches of the Indian subcontinent.
The point is more than just a geographical feature; it holds military importance due to its location near the India-Pakistan border and the Siachen Glacier, considered the world’s highest battlefield.
