India’s women workforce participation hits 37% in FY23: Education Minister

In 2022-23, the participation of women in the country’s workforce increased to 37 per cent, announced Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on October 28, 2023. He noted that this figure was at 23 per cent in 2017-18.

Pradhan emphasised the balanced societal growth with the rising women’s workforce participation, and stated that women tend to be more hardworking than men. He attributed the increase in women’s participation in the workforce to the women-focused schemes implemented by the Narendra Modi government. He highlighted the government’s commitment to prioritising women in policy-making and leadership roles, underscoring the Prime Minister’s emphasis on uplifting women in the country.

The Minister stressed the importance of skilling women to bolster the country’s workforce. In addition to this, he noted the need for reskilling and up-skilling working women to help them adapt to evolving technologies. Pradhan reported a decrease in the unemployment rate, from six per cent in 2017-18 to 3.7 per cent in 2022-23.

During the programme, Pradhan distributed appointment letters from various central organisations, including railways and India Post, to a total of 172 individuals. Meanwhile, at a similar event in Cuttack, Union MoS for Tribal Affairs Bishweswar Tudu distributed appointment letters to 114 people.
