India’s Job Market Expands as Hiring Becomes More Selective: Report

India’s job market shows signs of steady recovery, although hiring patterns are gradually evolving as employers adopt a more selective approach. According to the February 2026 Hiring Lab report by Indeed, job creation continues to grow, but organisations are increasingly focusing on specific skills and roles while making recruitment decisions.
The report indicates that job postings increased by 1.6 per cent in February 2026, reflecting a modest but consistent rise in employment opportunities across sectors. Compared with the same period last year, postings are 7 per cent higher, suggesting that hiring activity has strengthened despite global economic uncertainties. This upward trend highlights the resilience of India’s employment market and the continued demand for talent across various industries.
A broader comparison with the period before the pandemic further underlines the scale of this growth. Job postings are now 87 per cent higher than pre-pandemic levels, showing how significantly India’s labour market has expanded over the past few years. The surge reflects the rapid transformation of industries, the rise of digital businesses, and the growing demand for skilled professionals in emerging sectors.
However, the report also points out that the nature of hiring is shifting. Employers are becoming more cautious and selective when recruiting candidates. Instead of focusing purely on increasing headcount, companies are placing greater emphasis on finding professionals who possess specialised skills, industry knowledge, and the ability to adapt to changing workplace requirements.
Recruiters increasingly prioritise candidates who demonstrate strong technical capabilities, digital literacy, and problem-solving skills. Many organisations also emphasise adaptability and continuous learning, as technological advancements and evolving business models continue to reshape job roles.
Another key trend highlighted in the report is the growing alignment between job requirements and industry demands. Employers look for candidates who can contribute effectively from the start, reducing the need for extensive training. As a result, candidates who possess practical experience, certifications, or specialised expertise are likely to have an advantage in the current hiring environment.
Overall, the latest data suggests that India’s job market is expanding steadily, offering new opportunities for job seekers. At the same time, the evolving hiring landscape indicates that professionals must continue upgrading their skills to remain competitive in an increasingly dynamic employment market.
