The world has become a global village today connecting people and cultures. Keeping this in mind, Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, celebrated Hangeul Day honouring the deep-rooted cultural ties between India and Korea. The day is celebrated in South Korea to commemorate the creation of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, by Sejong the Great in 1443.

The event commenced in the school auditorium, which was beautifully adorned with Indian and Korean elements, symbolising the harmonious relationship between the two nations. The vibrant decor created an atmosphere of promise and celebration.

The event was graced by the presence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Mr Chang Jae-bok, Dr Neha Berlia, Co-Promoter, Apeejay Stya & Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University, the Director of Korean Cultural Centre India, Mr Hwang II Yong, and other distinguished members of the Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI).

The esteemed guests were warmly welcomed by the school’s Principal, Mr Purshottam Dutt Vashisht, Vice-principal Ms Neha Sharma, four DP-2 students along with the entire team of Apeejay School International (ASI). The dignitaries were greeted with a traditional Indian welcome – a ceremonial tilak along with a bouquet symbolising respect and reverence.

The celebration began with the ceremonial lamp-lighting accompanied by a melodious rendition of Ganesh Vandana performed by the ASI students, invoking blessings for the occasion. The dignitaries were then presented with green saplings, a gesture that represents the school’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

This was followed by the rendition of the National Anthems of both India and Korea, signifying mutual respect and admiration. A series of speeches highlighted the significance of Hangeul Day, with the spotlight on Himav Berlia, a student of MYP-2, who eloquently delivered a speech in Korean, detailing the importance of Hangeul Day and its cultural relevance.

Addressing everyone present, His Excellency Mr Chang Jae-bok said, “Namaste and Annyeonghaseyo, everyone. I am touched by the warm welcome from the staff and students of Apeejay School as we celebrate the 578th anniversary of Hangeul Day together. Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, was created by King Sejong the Great to simplify the complex writing system, allowing ordinary people to read and write. His compassionate vision remains relevant today, symbolising Korea’s democratic and egalitarian spirit. Today, we celebrate not just history, but also culture and learning. We have exciting performances lined up, showcasing traditional and modern Korean culture, thanks to KCCI.”

It is heartening to see the growing interest in the Korean language in India, with many schools and universities now offering courses, he shared. “The rise of K-pop, K-dramas, and K-movies has sparked global interest in Korean culture. Learning Korean can open doors to internships, jobs with top Korean companies like Samsung and LG, study abroad opportunities, and scholarships. I commend Apeejay School for promoting Korean language education and building bridges between Korea and India. Your efforts are shaping the future of our nation’s relations. May your future shine bright with success, His Excellency added.

To elevate the cultural vibrancy of the event, a series of mesmerising performances followed. Students of ASI, dressed in traditional Korean attire featuring red and blue long skirts, performed the elegant Galggangsullae dance. The stage came alive with the grace and poise of the performers, offering a glimpse into the rich Korean culture.

The highlight was a thrilling Taekwondo demonstration by KCCI members, who showcased their skills by breaking tiles at an impressive height of over six feet, leaving the audience in awe. Their powerful display was followed by a spontaneous rendition of Korean tunes followed by the song Kehete Hai Humko Pyaar Se, India Waale, blending Indian and Korean cultures seamlessly.

Speaking at the event, Dr Neha Berlia said: “I am delighted to be here on this special occasion of Hangeul Day. I extend a special welcome to the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Mr Chang Jae-bok. I would also like to extend a very warm welcome to the Director of Korean Cultural Centre India, Mr Hwang II Yong, and other distinguished members of KCCI. ”

“Hangeul Day marks an amazing culture of Korea. While I have not yet had the privilege to visit Korea, a friend of mine who recently visited was there sharing their first impression of Seoul with me. ‘A city of almost perfect harmony’, he called it. Young people spend the day discussing limitless innovation and end by walking through timeless markets with their friends and family. Harmony, innovation, timelessness – what an amazing cultural heritage whose core is shared in our Indian soul. This is why Apeejay is so proud of our partnership with KCCI,” Dr Neha Berlia shared.

Together, she added, “We are supporting Korean language classes, organising cultural workshops, tours, and student exchange programmes, especially close to my heart, promoting the practice of Taekwondo.”

“Harmony, innovation, silentness, all in one breath. What an empowering gift from Korea to us. As I conclude, I ask all to reflect on the deeper significance of what written language is across cultures and times. Written words have bridges. Bridges not just between past and present, but also between what we are learning today. This was true when my grandfather, a freedom fighter, wrote letter upon letter, put effort upon effort to open the first of the Apeejay Schools. It is true that Apeejay’s past will be treasured with KCCI for many, many tomorrows to come,” Dr Neha Berlia said.

Further captivating performances ensued, including the enchanting fan dance, where KCCI members gracefully twirled with traditional Korean fans. The modern aspect of Korean culture was showcased through an energetic K-pop dance performance by KCCI girls, who donned sleek black-and-white outfits, exuding a cool, contemporary vibe. Their dynamic moves and impeccable synchronisation brought the essence of K-pop to life.

The cultural showcase concluded with a musical performance that beautifully blended Korean and Indian melodies, creating a harmonious fusion of the two traditions. This final act left the audience spellbound, epitomising the shared spirit of cultural exchange.

Taking the stage Mr Purshottam Dutt Vashisht said, “Today, we are honoured to welcome His Excellency Mr Chang Jae-bok, Director of KCCI, Mr Hwang Il Yong, Dr Neha Berlia, and other guests from the Korean Embassy and KCCI to Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. This special day highlights the deep cultural ties between India and Korea, a relationship that dates back centuries, symbolised by Princess Suriratna, who became the Queen of Korea.”

Apeejay Education, founded by Dr Stya Paul, is committed to holistic education, instilling values of knowledge, character, and service. “Under the leadership of the present Chairperson Mrs Sushma Paul Berlia, Apeejay continues to deliver high-quality education, promoting international-mindedness and respect for global cultures. Today, we celebrate Hangeul Day, marking the creation of the Korean alphabet by King Sejong the Great. Hangeul not only revolutionised literacy in Korea but also preserved the nation’s cultural identity. At Apeejay, we value such initiatives that blend education and culture, enriching society,” Mr Vashisht shared.

“At ASI, we always strive to cultivate an environment of international-mindedness, fostering respect for cultures from across the globe — and it is this shared aspiration that makes today’s gathering even more special. We look forward to strengthening our cultural and educational exchange with Korea, building upon our shared history and the deep ties that unite us,” Mr Vashisht said.

“I participated in a dance that introduced me to the beauty of Korean culture. It was a wonderful experience that broadened our perspective. While we take immense pride in our Indian heritage, events like these allow us to explore and appreciate other rich cultures. Performing dances from both India and Korea gave me deeper insights into the traditions of both nations. Additionally, learning the Korean language will be an asset, particularly for our resumes, as many of us plan to pursue higher studies abroad. Overall, the experience was absolutely enriching,” shares Ria Chadha, a DP-1 student.

The event culminated in a group photograph with all the dignitaries, participants, and students, capturing the essence of the celebration followed by a vote of thanks. Students were also invited to participate in workshops on Samulnori, Taekwondo, and K-pop dance, offering them a unique opportunity to further their understanding of global educational practices.
