Recently, Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, Jalandhar and NIST School, Bhagatpur, Nepal, partnered for a unique learning activity on Water Conservation and Rainwater Harvesting. The session aimed to equip students with practical knowledge and inspire them to adopt everyday conservation practices. By bringing together learners from both countries, the programme also highlighted the value of international cooperation in addressing global environmental challenges.
The event opened with a well-prepared PPT presentation on greywater recycling and sustainable reuse. Students explained how greywater, which comes from washing and bathing, can be safely recycled for tasks such as gardening or cleaning, while blackwater requires intensive treatment before reuse. This distinction helped participants grasp the science behind water reuse and its relevance to both homes and schools.
From theory to practice: Live demonstrations
To make the learning hands-on, students witnessed a working model of rainwater harvesting. The demonstration illustrated step by step how rainwater can be collected, filtered, and stored for daily use. Seeing the model in action gave students clarity on how simple methods can reduce dependence on freshwater sources. The activity sparked curiosity and encouraged learners to think about how such systems could be implemented in their own surroundings.
Interactive discussions followed, where students shared water-saving tips drawn from personal experience. They pledged to conserve water in their homes and schools, from fixing leaks to reusing water for plants. Both Apeejay School and NIST School agreed to initiate small-scale projects, including greywater reuse in gardens and surveys on rainwater harvesting within their campuses.

Strengthening student partnerships across borders
Beyond environmental education, the collaboration fostered a spirit of unity between students of India and Nepal. Working together on sustainability themes allowed young learners to exchange ideas, appreciate diverse perspectives, and develop a shared commitment to climate action.
The initiative proved that schools, by encouraging such collaborations, can shape responsible citizens who are ready to take on global challenges with confidence and creativity.
