Dermatology is a beautiful branch that helps you to know how to be confident in your skin, says Priyal Garbyal, an alumna of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. After passing out from class XII, she went on to pursue her MBBS from Maulana Azad Medical College (Delhi) and completed her MD in Dermatology at Lady Harding Medical College (Delhi).
In a candid interview, she expressed gratitude for the foundational support provided by Apeejay that helped her achieve greater heights.
Tell us about you and your work.
I hold nearly a decade of experience in dermatology, serving as a specialist in different hospitals across Delhi and Ghaziabad. Presently, I am on a short break following the birth of my second child earlier this year.
Share some insights on how Apeejay was the right institute for you.
I joined Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park in the nursery. I studied there for the 14 years. With God’s grace, I stumbled upon extremely helpful teachers who have helped me grow on both academic and personal fronts. Initially, I was very reserved but with ample opportunities, I became an active participant in various extracurricular activities. This school has given me a lot more than I ever expected and I will always be grateful for their patience and unwavering support in helping me become who I am today.
You have always envisioned becoming a doctor?
My mother is a doctor. Ever since I was little I have seen her work so hard and diligently towards her patients. This inspired me and hence It was clear to me from a very young age that I wanted to become a doctor when I grew up.
What made you choose dermatology as your career choice?
My interest in dermatology was sparked by my struggle with severe acne during my teenage years, which negatively impacted my morale. I realised it is exceptionally important to take care of not just your body from the inside, but the outside too. Henceforth, I chose to become a dermatologist.
How was your educational journey at Apeejay School?
As mentioned before, I feel very fortunate to have studied at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. I used to be a scholar. English, Chemistry, and Biology were my favourite subjects. The journey has been incredible as the teachers have guided and supported me well, throughout! Proud to be an Apeejayite!
What are some of the most common challenges you face in your profession?
For doctors in India, it is a challenge to maintain a healthy work-life balance. For many years, to achieve what I dreamt of, I have been studying for long hours and sometimes I felt even though this profession is very noble, it is not as rewarding as it should be. At times, it used to take a toll on my mental health a lot but with time, now I have realised and found my ways to maintain the work-life balance.
Do you have your clinic or do you practice at any hospital?
I don’t own a clinic. I am a visiting doctor at different hospitals — SSKH (Delhi), ESI-PGISMR (Delhi), and Santosh Hospital (Ghaziabad).
Any fond memories from your school days?
There is not just one but many! The most fond ones that I reminisce about are the inter-house competitions and the Annual Appreciation Days. The samosas from the school canteen remain one of my favourite snacks.
Advice to aspiring dermatologists.
Always work hard and focus on your goal. You must choose smart studying over rote learning always. Dermatology is a beautiful field. If you love what you do, it will always be rewarding.
