It is true that India is ridden with population problems. But even here is a silver lining. We are one of the few nation’s in the world, where the major chunk of our nation is young. This irresistible youth power must not go astray. It should be harnessed in a productive manner and this can be a key force to help India make rapid strides as a global powerhouse.

This year on International Youth Day, let us take a look at the origins of this day and how the youth can better both themselves and the world around them

The Inception

International Youth Day, celebrated on 12 August every year, is a United Nations designated observance aimed at highlighting the importance of young people and their contributions to society. The day was first designated in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly as a response to the need for increased awareness of youth-related issues and to promote the active participation of young people in various spheres of life. This day holds a special significance in India as it recognises the potential and vitality of the country’s young generation.

Swami Vivekananda and The act of inspiring the Indian youth

In the Indian context, the teachings of Swami Vivekananda have had a profound impact on the youth. Swami Vivekananda, the revered spiritual leader and philosopher, was a strong advocate for empowering the youth of India and perhaps the first one to be so vocal about the same. He believed that the potential of the nation resided in its young minds and urged them to rise above their limitations and work fearlessly towards the country’s progress. His iconic speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893 was a clarion call to the youth to be fearless, have faith in themselves, and serve the nation with dedication. Even today, Swami Vivekananda’s teachings continue to motivate and inspire Indian youth to strive for excellence and contribute positively to society.

To change the world, the youth has to be healthy first

As the torchbearers of the future, Indian youth must prioritise their well-being to effectively contribute to society. Adopting healthy habits is essential for a fulfilling and balanced life.

Firstly, maintaining a regular exercise routine helps in keeping the body and mind fit. Engaging in physical activities not only promotes good health but also improves focus and mental agility.

Secondly, developing a habit of reading nurtures intellectual growth and widens one’s perspective. Books have the power to instill empathy, creativity, and critical thinking skills in the young minds.

Thirdly, cultivating mindfulness and meditation can help manage stress and build emotional resilience.

Fourthly, a balanced and nutritious diet is crucial for overall health and energy.

Lastly, forming strong social connections and spending quality time with friends and family fosters a sense of belonging and support.

The youth must return to the society

Indian youth have a pivotal role to play in shaping the nation’s social development. One significant way they can contribute is by actively engaging in community service and volunteer work. By identifying the needs and issues within their communities, young individuals can organise initiatives to address them, such as providing education support, conducting health camps, or participating in environmental conservation efforts.

Moreover, Indian youth are tech-savvy and can leverage their digital skills to promote social causes and create awareness about important issues through social media platforms and online campaigns. Empowering and supporting marginalised communities, especially in rural areas, can also be a potent way for the youth to drive inclusive development.

This day is a reminder not just an occasion for hashtags

International Youth Day serves as a reminder of the potential and responsibility that rests with India’s young population. Inspired by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, the youth should take charge of their destiny by adopting healthy habits, nurturing their physical and mental well-being. As they grow and learn, they must actively engage in social development, contributing to the progress and upliftment of the nation.

By harnessing their energy, creativity, and passion, the youth of India can become architects of positive change, driving the country towards a brighter and more inclusive future. On this auspicious day, let us celebrate the youth of India and encourage them to seize the opportunities that lie ahead, for they are the agents of transformation and the guardians of our nation’s destiny.
