A good story begins with wonder—and for Devina Puri, that spark of wonder turned into a published book. Watching a movie or reading a story can often transport us to a new world, but writing a story gives us the power to create one. Devina, a student of Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, Jalandhar, discovered this joy as she penned The Map Maker’s Secret published by Bri Books.  Her book, full of mystery, adventure, and magical animals, was born from her love for imagination and storytelling. In this delightful conversation, Devina shares the secrets behind her first book, her inspirations, and her aspirations. Read edited excerpts:

Devina, tell us about your book The Map Maker’s Secret. What is the story about?
The story is about a girl who loves adventure. She gets transported into a magical forest where she meets amazing creatures like a lion and a unicorn. In the end, she gains magical powers—but when she returns home, she realises it was all a dream. Or maybe… it wasn’t!

What inspired you to write such a magical and adventurous story?
I’ve always had a deep interest in mysteries and adventures. I love thinking about secret lands and magical things. That’s how the idea came to me—to create a world filled with magical animals and a brave girl discovering it all.

Since when have you been writing stories or poems?
I started writing in my own diary when I was about ten years old. I used to scribble down little stories and poems. Now, I feel ready to share them with the world.

How has your school supported your creative writing journey?
My school has always encouraged me. I enjoy English and Hindi classes a lot—they teach us so many stories and poems that really inspire me. My teachers are very supportive and they always praise my writing. It motivates me to keep going.

What was your experience like while publishing the book? Was it difficult?
At first, it was hard. Some publishers didn’t accept my book. I had to rewrite and improve it many times. It took around two months, and I edited it about ten times before it was finally ready and accepted by Bri Books. I just never gave up!

What’s next for you as an author? Do you have more stories in mind?
Yes! My dream is to become the best author. I want to write many more books and improve with each one. My friends and teachers praised my book a lot, and that makes me want to keep writing and dreaming big.
