“I dream of opening an animal shelter someday,” says Class 12 student

For Ridhima Shankar, a Class 12 medical student from Apeejay School, Kharghar, compassion isn’t just a value—it’s her way of life. Her deep affection for animals has shaped her dream of becoming a veterinarian and starting her own animal shelter someday. With determination and kindness at her core, Ridhima hopes to turn her empathy into meaningful action.

Read edited excerpts:

Ridhima, tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired your love for animals.

I have always had a soft spot for animals. Even as a child, whenever I saw an injured dog or cat, I would feel extremely bad and wonder how I could help. That feeling stayed with me and inspired me to dream of becoming a veterinarian. My goal is to open an animal shelter where I can care for those in need.

Is that why you chose Biology as your stream?

Yes, absolutely! I chose Biology because I want to understand more about living organisms and prepare for veterinary studies. It felt like the right choice for someone who truly wants to work for animal welfare.

Can you share a moment when you went out of your way to help an animal in need?

Yes, once I was on my way to school for a test when I saw an injured cat. I knew I couldn’t just ignore it, so I stopped and moved it to a safe spot before continuing to school. I was slightly late for my test, but I felt peaceful knowing I did the right thing.

How are you preparing for NEET and your future career as a vet?

I’ve started NEET preparation and regularly take mock tests to improve time management. My teachers also guide me whenever I have doubts. I’ve started exploring good veterinary colleges in Mumbai—it feels great to have a clear goal to work toward.

What’s your ultimate dream as a future vet?

My dream is to open a shelter for stray and injured animals. I want to create a safe space where they receive medical help, food, and love. Helping animals gives me a sense of purpose, and I hope to dedicate my life to that cause.
