How to be summer trek ready

Here are a few ways

Summer is the perfect season to answer the call of the mountains and immerse yourself in the thrill of trekking. Bright skies, blossoming trails, and the spirit of adventure make it irresistible. But before you set off on a scenic journey, preparation is key. Here’s how you can get trekking-ready this summer and make the most of your adventure.

1. Choose the Right Trek

Not all treks are suited for summer. Research trails that offer pleasant temperatures, natural shade, and manageable difficulty levels. Hill stations like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of the Northeast offer some of the best summer trekking routes. Whether it’s the Valley of Flowers or Triund, opt for trails that won’t expose you to extreme heat.

2. Gear Up Smartly

Packing right can make or break your trek. Lightweight, breathable clothing is essential. Choose sweat-wicking fabrics that dry quickly. Always carry a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective sunglasses, and a high-SPF sunscreen to shield yourself from the intense sun. Invest in sturdy, broken-in trekking shoes and moisture-absorbing socks to prevent blisters.

3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Summer trekking demands careful attention to hydration. Dehydration can creep in quickly. Carry at least two liters of water and a few electrolyte sachets. A hydration bladder is a great investment for easy sipping on the go. Remember, if you feel thirsty, you’re already behind on hydration.

4. Lighten Your Load

In summer, a heavy backpack can become a burden. Stick to essentials: water, lightweight snacks, a first-aid kit, a light jacket for high-altitude chill, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a trekking pole for support. The lighter your pack, the easier and more enjoyable your trek will be.

5. Respect the Sun

Plan your trekking schedule wisely. Start early in the morning to cover maximum distance before the midday heat sets in. Take frequent shaded breaks to cool down, and listen to your body. Watch out for symptoms of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea, or excessive sweating.

6. Train Your Body

Trekking in summer can be demanding. Start fitness training at least a month before your trip. Focus on building endurance through cardio exercises like jogging, cycling, and swimming. Strengthen your legs and core, and practice walking with a backpack to simulate real conditions.

7. Embrace the Journey

Lastly, remember that trekking is as much about the experience as reaching the destination. Soak in the landscapes, interact with fellow trekkers, respect the environment, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

With the right preparation and a spirit of adventure, your summer trek can turn into an unforgettable story of exploration and triumph. Happy trekking!
