The intellectual and emotional connection between a teacher (guru) and student (shishya) is the medium through which wisdom is transmitted. Thus, the teacher-student relationship holds paramount importance, threading its way through classrooms, schools, and educational journeys while leaving an enduring mark on students’ academic success. It profoundly influences the learning experience, creating an environment where students not only excel academically but also thrive personally.
How to create this foundation of trust & support
When students place trust in their teachers, they become more willing, enthusiastic and confident to engage in the learning process. This trust empowers students to take risks, ask questions, and seek help when needed, essential components of academic growth.

Moreover, teachers who establish supportive connections with their students create a nurturing environment. This emotional support serves as a safety net during challenging times, such as when students grapple with complex subjects or face personal obstacles that may impact their academic performance. A caring and understanding teacher’s presence can make the difference between a student giving up and persevering through adversity. Sharing a similar thought Dr. Preeti Suryawanshi, an Associate Professor at Apeejay School of Management (ASM) mentioned, “Teacher-student relationships are the bedrock of effective education, exerting a profound impact on academic achievement. As a management educator, I firmly believe that fostering trust, open communication, and unwavering support between educators and learners not only enhances the learning experience, but also plays a pivotal role in shaping students’ future success.”
The Apeejay educator further added that in the context of management education, students’ bond with their mentors or gurus play a vital role in nurturing future leaders and effective managers. “The mentor-student relationship is particularly pivotal in preparing individuals to excel in the complex world of business and management, instilling not only knowledge but also the qualities of leadership, teamwork, and ethical decision-making that are essential for success in managerial roles.”
The bond enhances learning experiences
Teacher-student relationships extend beyond emotional support; they lead to fulfilling learning experiences. A teacher who understands their students well can adapt their teaching methods to cater to individual needs. This personalised approach is particularly valuable in classrooms with diverse learning styles and abilities.
Furthermore, a positive connection with a teacher often translates into increased motivation. When students feel valued and respected by their educators, they are more likely to attend classes, complete assignments, and actively participate in discussions. This intrinsic motivation becomes a driving force behind academic success.
Fosters effective communication
Effective communication is the cornerstone of any healthy relationship, including those between teachers and students. When teachers and students communicate openly and respectfully, a collaborative environment emerges. Students feel comfortable expressing their doubts and opinions, while teachers can provide guidance and feedback more effectively.

This communication isn’t limited to academic subjects; it extends to skill development. Teachers frequently serve as role models, imparting valuable lessons in empathy, resilience, and problem-solving. These life skills, acquired through meaningful interactions with teachers, can significantly impact a student’s educational journey and beyond.
A lasting impact
The impact of teacher-student relationships extends beyond the classroom and can leave an indelible mark on students’ lives. As Prof. Preeti also highlights that positive teacher-student relationships can inspire a love for learning that lasts a lifetime. Many successful individuals attribute their achievements to the guidance and mentorship of a caring teacher. These relationships can inspire students to pursue higher education, choose fulfilling careers, and become responsible citizens who give back to their communities.
