Hobbies: Forgotten joy or secret to future success?

Discover the hidden strength of hobbies in shaping success

In a world where grades, deadlines, and achievements seem to dominate, hobbies often get pushed to the sidelines. Painting, gardening, reading, singing, crocheting, and even stamp collecting, once cherished ways to relax and express oneself, are now viewed as “optional” or even “time-wasting.” But are hobbies truly irrelevant in today’s competitive age, or are they quietly shaping the future of success?

Think about it.

A student who learns music is not just strumming a guitar; they are training their mind in discipline, rhythm, and creativity. A teenager who plays chess is not simply moving pawns and bishops; they are sharpening problem-solving skills that could one day help in business or science. Even crocheting or baking, often dismissed as “just hobbies,” teaches patience, focus, and innovation. In fact, some of today’s most successful entrepreneurs credit their hobbies for sparking their best ideas.

The trouble is, many youngsters today feel they cannot “afford” hobbies because every free hour must be spent preparing for exams, coding classes, or competitive tests. Parents, too, sometimes prioritise academic milestones over personal passions. But here’s the irony: hobbies, far from distracting us, actually improve performance. Studies show that pursuing a creative activity boosts memory, reduces stress, and enhances problem-solving — all skills directly linked to better academic and professional outcomes.

Hobbies also offer what marks and certificates cannot: a sense of identity. They help children discover who they are beyond their grades. When life gets overwhelming, hobbies become a safe retreat, a reminder that joy can be found in small things — a melody, a sketch, or even a freshly planted seed.

“In today’s race, hobbies are often forgotten, treated as a luxury. But the truth is, they are a source of joy, creativity, and mental peace. A simple hobby can sharpen skills, build discipline, and even open doors to future success. Don’t let your hidden passion fade — it might be the spark that defines your tomorrow.” I believe truly they Hobbies are the secret to future success, and it gives contentment to your sou,l” shares Ms Maninder Kaur, Social Science educator at Apeejay School, Model Town, Jalandhar.

So perhaps it’s time to stop seeing hobbies as “extras” and start valuing them as essential life skills. They are not just a forgotten joy from the past; they might very well be the secret to a happier, more successful future.
