Here’s what truly goes into earning a doctorate

Behind every research breakthrough lies years of perseverance, patience, and passion

A PhD is often seen as the highest academic honour — a mark of expertise, discipline, and intellectual depth. But for those who embark on this demanding journey, it’s much more than just a title. It’s a test of endurance, curiosity, and the courage to keep going when results take months — or even years — to appear.

The long road of research

A PhD is not about memorising facts; it’s about creating new knowledge. Students spend years formulating questions, designing experiments, and gathering data that might one day contribute to society’s well-being. “As a research scholar, you must constantly learn new concepts, handle multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines — it’s both challenging and deeply rewarding,” says Pankaj, a PhD scholar at NIPER-Ahmedabad and an alumnus of Apeejay Stya University’s School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

In his field of pharmaceutical sciences, research involves long hours in the lab, precision-driven experiments, and continuous learning. But no matter the discipline, all PhD scholars share one trait — persistence.

Funding, focus, and self-discipline

PhD life in India demands immense self-motivation. Scholarships such as GPAT, NIPER, GATE, UGC-NET, or CSIR-JRF help ease financial stress, allowing students to focus fully on research. “Qualifying for national exams isn’t just about merit — these scholarships support your survival and let you concentrate on your work,” adds Pankaj.

For most scholars, managing time, staying focused, and dealing with academic setbacks are as much part of the journey as the research itself.

Mentorship makes the difference

Behind every successful PhD candidate is a guiding hand — a mentor or supervisor who helps navigate the highs and lows. Choosing the right guide is crucial. As Pankaj advises, “Identify faculty members whose work inspires you, and be clear about why you want to pursue research under them.”

Mentorship doesn’t just offer academic direction — it also builds resilience, confidence, and scientific maturity.

The reward of discovery

While the path is steep, the rewards are profound. The joy of publishing a paper, receiving appreciation at a conference, or seeing one’s research solve a real-world problem makes the struggle worthwhile. Beyond the degree, a PhD teaches critical thinking, patience, and humility — qualities that extend far beyond academia.
