Mahuli, a captivating hill fort in Maharashtra, is located in Thane district. The fort’s peak rises to an impressive elevation of 2,700 feet, comprising a cluster of two to three hills, each with distinct names.

Despite the passage of time, many of the fortifications at Mahuli remain intact. Visitors can see the remnants of an old guesthouse, although its arch has crumbled away. The summit features several water cisterns, with additional tanks along the route to the top. At the fort’s highest point, there is a quaint Shiva temple, and nearby, to the left of the temple, lies a group of intriguing caves. The dense forests surrounding the fort have been designated a sanctuary, adding to the area’s natural allure. Today, Mahuli Fort is recognised as a protected monument, preserving its historical significance.

The trek to Mahuli Fort begins at a Shiva temple situated at the base of the hill. Starting from the temple, trekkers proceed along a straight path until they encounter a seasonal stream, which overflows during the monsoon season. After crossing the stream, the trek continues along a narrow ridge, leading to a challenging, nearly vertical rock patch. To assist trekkers in navigating this difficult section, local villagers have installed a sturdy ladder. Once the ladder is scaled, hikers reach a plateau.

From this plateau, the trail continues until a water tank becomes visible. At this point, the path diverges into two routes. To reach the caves and the Shiva temple, trekkers should follow the path to the left.

Mahuli Fort is not only a trekker’s delight but also a haven for history enthusiasts and nature lovers.
