Harness the power of R.E.C.A.L.L. through these 6 steps

Adopting a diverse approach to memory enhancement can result in a more profound comprehension

Memory is one of those tools in our cognitive armoury without which we are lost. But that does not necessarily require a magic wand to enhance it. The power of certain techniques can be harnessed to tremendous advantage for improving the storage and retrieval of information via R.E.C.A.L.L.

Six strategies for improving memory

1. Repetition: The Foundation of Memory

It involves the repetition of information several times before “locking it in” the memory. The repetition should be combined with spaced repetition, whereby one gradually increases time intervals between successive review sessions.

2. Encoding: How to Make Information Stick

This is one of the critical encoding steps towards forming memory. It also helps encode new information in a way that may be retained in your brain. It becomes easy to encode information correctly if you associate it with visual, acoustic, or semantic cues. For instance, if you link that word that you want to remember with some memorable picture or jingle, it will be easy for you to remember.

3. Chunking: Informative Organization

It is the process of breaking larger pieces of information into smaller and smaller, more manageable pieces. It is very helpful when you work with such complex data, like a phone number, password, or ideas in the academic approach to learning. Associating things with one another makes it easier for our short-term memory to retain and access material.

4. Active Recall: Testing to Learn

This requires testing on the material to be learnt rather than passive review. Techniques that could make a big difference in recall include using flashcards, taking practice quizzes, or teaching someone else. This method does not only reinforce memory but points out areas that need more attention.

5. Loci Method: A Mental Walkthrough

Also known as a memory palace, is a powerful mnemonic that associates data with the locations in a known environment. Envisioning the process of moving through that space and recalling associated items allows you to memorise lots of information more dramatically. This old trick comes especially in handy when you must memorize speeches, exams, or any other context in which you must recall minutiae.

6. Luminal Processing: Applying Cognitive Psychology

Though it is a less familiar or rather misinterpreted term, cognitive psychology provides us with some wealth of understanding of how our mind processes. Methods include dual coding — how one uses both verbal and visual information interleaving — mixing different material during learning sessions.

Embracing a multi-faceted approach to memory can lead to deeper understanding and longer-lasting recall, turning the art of memory into a practical, everyday skill.
