Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, is presently conducting specialised Skill Enhancement Classes for students who have recently completed their +2 examinations. These classes are designed to nurture artistic talent and provide hands-on exposure to various creative disciplines. One of the key highlights of the ongoing programme is the in-depth training in the art of sculpture, a discipline that holds international recognition and significance.
The sculpture sessions are being led by Mr. Basudev Biswas, an esteemed faculty member of the Sculpture Department, along with Dr. Mohinder Mastana, Head of the Department. Together, they are mentoring the students in both the theoretical and practical aspects of sculptural art. The training encompasses various mediums, including clay modeling, paper clay, Plaster of Paris (POP), and M-Seal. By introducing students to these different materials, the instructors are equipping them with versatile skills necessary for contemporary sculpture-making.
In addition to material handling, students are being taught to work with different sculptural forms—both round (three-dimensional) and relief (two-dimensional). This comprehensive approach allows students to understand essential concepts such as volume, texture, proportion, and spatial awareness. The focus on both two-dimensional and three-dimensional frameworks is fostering a holistic understanding of shape and form, vital components in the visual arts.
Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra shared her views on the initiative, expressing pride in the college’s continued efforts to nurture creativity among students. She remarked that this phase, immediately after the completion of school education, is an ideal time for students to explore and refine their creative interests. By engaging in such activities, students can productively channel their energy while discovering their own potential and passion.

Dr. Dhingra also emphasized the therapeutic value of art, highlighting how involvement in creative disciplines such as sculpture significantly contributes to students’ mental well-being. According to her, the process of creating art not only enhances technical skills but also provides a constructive outlet for expression and emotional balance.
She further acknowledged the efforts of Ms. Rajni Gupta and Dr. Seema Sharma for their commendable role in organising and managing the skill enhancement programme. Their dedication has ensured the smooth execution and meaningful delivery of the sessions.
Overall, the sculpture training classes are proving to be a valuable platform for aspiring artists to gain practical experience, build foundational knowledge, and develop a deeper appreciation for the arts. The initiative aligns with Apeejay College of Fine Arts’ mission to promote holistic education through creativity, skill development, and personal growth.
