Budding Designers Explore Outdoor Sketching at Batra Park

Students of Apeejay Institute of Design step into nature for an immersive, hands-on learning experience

Taking learning beyond the four walls of the classroom, GDP – Foundation (Second Semester) students of Apeejay Institute of Design went for an outdoor study at Batra Park, Tughlakabad. The experiential visit was planned to strengthen observational abilities and encourage students to engage directly with a natural and semi-urban environment, translating real-life visuals into spontaneous sketches and visual notes.

The outdoor study was designed as a practical extension of studio learning, allowing students to observe spatial relationships in an organic setting. Guided by faculty, learners closely examined forms, textures, scale, light, and shadow while responding to the constantly changing surroundings. Moving away from controlled indoor spaces helped students understand how design principles function dynamically in real-world contexts.

Sketching formed the core of the exercise, serving as a vital tool for visual thinking and immediate interpretation. Students practised quick, continuous line sketches to capture movement, depth, and spatial clarity within limited timeframes. This approach encouraged them to simplify complex forms, focus on essential details, and express ideas confidently without overworking the drawing. Working under time constraints further reinforced adaptability and creative decision-making—key skills for aspiring designers.

The park setting also provided opportunities to observe pathways, built elements, and patterns of human interaction. These observations helped students develop a deeper understanding of composition, rhythm, and context, while fostering sensitivity towards how people engage with spaces. Such on-site learning experiences sharpen visual memory, improve hand–eye coordination, and build confidence in documenting environments as they are experienced.

Sharing insights from the visit, Bhavik Rauthan, GDP–Foundation Semester II, said, “Studying outdoors is a refreshing change from sitting in the classroom all day. Being surrounded by fresh air and natural light makes learning feel more open and enjoyable. While challenges like wind or bright sunlight affect the process, they teach us how to adapt. Outdoor sketching has helped me observe movement more carefully and express emotions through simple lines.”

Overall, the outdoor study significantly enhanced students’ observational acuity, spatial understanding, and creative responsiveness. By integrating nature with hands-on practice, Apeejay Institute of Design continues to provide meaningful learning experiences that prepare students for real-world design challenges.
