Google’s Dr Jeff Dean hails India’s dominance in AI

During Google’s inaugural research event in Bengaluru, Dr Jeff Dean, Chief Scientist at Google DeepMind and Google Research, expressed confidence in India’s pivotal role in the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovations. The event, attended by leading AI practitioners, researchers, developers, and startups, aimed to explore the next frontiers of AI in India.

Acknowledging India’s significant technical talent, Dr. Dean highlighted the country’s strong tradition in computer science, emphasising the growing interest in machine learning among Indian students and professionals. He underscored India’s advantageous position in the AI landscape, given the substantial number of students and industry professionals already engaged in the field.

The event, which featured in-person discussions with Dr Dean and other Google leaders, focused on fostering collaborative interactions to harness AI for a better future. Key areas addressed included the development of language models (LLMs) for India, ensuring language inclusion for all Indians, leveraging AI in healthcare, optimising LLM efficiency, and promoting responsible AI development.

Dr Dean also shared insights into Google’s efforts, such as the “1,000 language effort,” aimed at making AI models available in all major languages. This initiative seeks to bridge the digital divide by ensuring accessibility to AI technologies for communities that were previously underserved.

The event brought together top AI/ML researchers from India’s leading educational institutions, providing a platform for sharing insights and research on the local AI landscape.
