At the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference, Google announced a major expansion of its AI offerings for schools, unveiling over 30 new tools designed to enhance teaching and learning. It is rolling out these innovations globally at no additional cost to all users of Google Workspace for Education.
The centrepiece of this announcement is Gemini in Classroom, a comprehensive suite of AI tools for educators. With this, teachers can now access features like AI-assisted lesson planning, automatic quiz and worksheet generation, gamified learning activities, presentation creation, and project idea brainstorming. These tools aim to streamline classroom tasks and free up more time for personalised instruction.
Two upcoming features, NotebookLM and Gems, promise to further transform classroom engagement. The former will enable educators to create dynamic study guides and audio overviews, while the latter will act as custom AI experts offering tailored academic support to students.
To help teachers better understand student progress, Google is introducing an advanced analytics tool that aligns performance with national and state learning standards in the U.S., with plans to expand globally. Institutions and education authorities will also be able to upload and manage their standards using the CASE Network 2 integration.
For students, Google has introduced Gemini for Education, a customised version of the Gemini AI app. It features Gemini Canvas, a tool that allows students to generate personalised quizzes, along with interactive diagrams and visual aids to simplify complex topics. Students aged 18 and above initially have access to it, but it will soon expand to include younger users.
Google emphasised that these tools were developed under strong oversight, incorporating child safety measures and parental controls. The company also confirmed that student data will not be used to train its AI models, reflecting a commitment to privacy and ethical AI use in education.
