Google introduces Gemini AI tools for teen students and educators

Google has announced the expansion of its generative AI tool, Gemini, to education communities, unveiling new features designed to enhance learning experiences. The company is set to make Gemini available to teen students in over 100 countries, free of charge for all educational institutions. This rollout will occur in the coming months, providing support for students and educators alike.

Gemini for Teen Students

Gemini will be accessible to teen students who meet Google’s minimum age requirements and use their Google Workspace for Education accounts in English. To ensure a safe and controlled environment, Gemini will be off by default for teens until school admins activate it as an Additional Service in the Admin console. The AI has been specifically tuned to filter inappropriate content and includes policies and guardrails to prevent exposure to unsuitable material.

A key feature for teens is the double-check response system, which automatically evaluates whether there is supporting content across the web for fact-based questions. This promotes information literacy and critical thinking among young users. Additionally, a teen-friendly onboarding experience will feature an AI literacy video endorsed by ConnectSafely and the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), providing tips on responsible AI usage.

Enhanced Tools for Educators

Educators will benefit from several new features designed to create captivating and effective learning experiences. The Learning Coach, a custom version of Gemini powered by LearnLM, will offer step-by-step study guidance and practice activities, including quizzes and games. This tool aims to help students build knowledge and confidence in their learning journey.

Extensions from OpenStax and Data Commons will soon be integrated, providing students with reliable information from trusted sources. These additions will enhance the educational content available through Gemini, making it a more robust tool for both teaching and learning.
