Navratri, or 9 divine nights, is a time of deep rest and rejuvenation. Navratri is an annual Hindu festival that is celebrated 4 times a year to mark the beginning of seasonal change and symbolizes renewal in both nature and human life.

The Navratri gives us a deep rest and relief from three things: the three tapas (the three types of fire) – Adi Bhautik (worldly botheration), Adi Daivik (botheration on the level of cosmic angles, Devas), and botheration of the Soul.

The nine days are compared to the nine months a baby spends in his/her mother’s womb. So these days are like coming out of the mother’s womb, having a new birth.

There are 4 seasonal Navratri. However, in practice, it is celebrated in Chaitra Navratri(March/April) and Sharada Navratri(Sept or Oct). The other two are Gupta(Secret) Navratri, which is celebrated twice a year – Magha Navratri(Jan-Feb) and Ashadha Navratri(June-July), by saints to focus on tantra, meditation, and inner spiritual powers, rather than celebration.

Chaitra Navratri(Vasant Navratri)

It marks the start of the Hindu Nav Varsh on the first day of the Hindu calendar. The festival ends on the 9th day, most celebrated as Rama Navami, the birth of Lord Rama. The Spring season also begins from this season. It symbolizes renewal, growth, and fresh beginnings

Ashada Navratri

Ashadha Navratri marks the start of the monsoon season.

Sharada Navratri

The most celebrated Navratri is celebrated as the beginning of autumn. It is dedicated to nine forms of Maa Shakti. It signifies the slaying of demon Mahishasura by Durga, and the tenth day is celebrated as Vijayadashami. It represents victory and clarity after struggle.

Magha Navratri

Marks the start of spring. The fifth day is celebrated as Basant Panchami.

During these nine nights, or ten days, people celebrate Navratri, usually fasting and praying. These nine days are represented by nine forms of Durga, each are worshipped on respected days.

Day 1 – Shailaputri, born of Shaila, which means that which is extraordinary, one who is born out of the peak of an experience.

Day 2 – Brahmacharini, Brahma means infinity, and she is someone who moves with infinity. Another aspect is the virgin aspect of Mother Divine – the energy is virgin like sun rays, though it is old, yet it is fresh and new.

Day 3 – Chandraghanta, Chandra means moon, related to mind, that which charms the mind, that which is the embodiment of beauty. Whenever anything appears beautiful to us, it is due to her energy.

Day 4 – Kushmanda, ball of energy, of prana. Whenever we experience immense energy, it is due to her aspect.

Day 5 – Skandamata, the mother of all co-systems, the school of knowledge – Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Sankhya, Yoga, Vedanta, and Uttara Mimamsa, includes astrology, music, and many more disciplines.

Day 6 – Katyayani, born out of the seer or witness of consciousness (intuitive ability).

Day 7 – Kaalratri, deep dark energy, that houses the infinite universe, that brings solace to every soul.

Day 8 – Maha Gauri gives momentum and ultimate freedom in life.

Day 9 – Siddhidhatri brings perfection in life and siddhis. Her blessing brings many miracles in life, which even appear to be impossible.

The Chaitra Navratri culminates in Ram Navami, and the Sharada Navratri culminates in Durga Puja and Vijayadashmi.  Navratri is celebrated in different ways throughout India. To Bengali Hindus, the term Navaratri implies Durga Puja in the warrior goddess aspect of Devi. In Nepal, Navaratri is called Dashain, and is a major annual homecoming and family event that celebrates the bonds between elders and youngsters with Tika Puja, as well as across family and community members.

Thus, Navratri is not only a festival of devotion and celebration but also a time for inner transformation and renewal. It marks important seasonal changes and teaches us to overcome negativity, gain strength, and move towards purity and wisdom. Each of the nine days represents a step in personal growth, guiding us towards a better and more balanced life.
