From School Leader to Dental Expert: Harmandeep Kaur Rai’s Inspiring Journey
This Apeejay alumna who is a dentist shares on why dentistry is a perfect blend of science, skill, and balance
A bright student, an eloquent speaker, and a leader at heart—Harmandeep Kaur Rai always knew she was destined for the medical field. However, her fascination with dentistry led her to pursue a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from SGRD, Amritsar. As she now practices in Jalandhar and looks forward to pursuing a Master’s abroad, she reflects on her school days, career choices, and what makes dentistry a rewarding profession.
What inspired you to become a doctor, and why did you choose dentistry over other branches of medicine?
I was always inclined towards the medical field, and by the time I reached Class 10, I was certain I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare. While choosing between medicine and dentistry, I found dentistry more fascinating. It offers a blend of science and artistry, allowing me to help people while also maintaining a good work-life balance.
Dentistry is a popular field among women doctors. What makes it such an attractive career option?
I believe it’s the flexibility and balance the profession offers. Unlike other medical specializations, dentistry is comparatively less hectic, giving doctors the chance to enjoy both their personal and professional lives. It provides independence, opportunities for entrepreneurship, and the ability to build long-term patient relationships.
Did your school days at Apeejay, Rama Mandi, influence your career choice?
Absolutely! I had already set my mind on medicine by Class 10, and my school played a major role in shaping my confidence and ambition. Being the head girl in 2018-19, participating in declamation, poetry, and inter-school competitions, and excelling in science—especially biology—all helped strengthen my decision. My teachers were incredible mentors whom I still miss!
What are three essential skills a good dentist must have?
A great dentist needs:
- Determination – The field requires patience and dedication.
- Hard work – It’s a skill-based profession that demands continuous learning.
- Artistic skills – Dentistry isn’t just about treatment; it’s about precision and craftsmanship.
What’s next for you? Any future aspirations?
I’m currently practicing in Jalandhar, but I have bigger dreams! I plan to pursue my Master’s abroad to gain international exposure and enhance my skills. Dentistry is an ever-evolving field, and I want to keep growing with it!
