From imagination to innovation

In a rapidly evolving world, architects are expected to be innovators and problem-solvers, not just designers of buildings

Architecture is not just about constructing buildings; it is about shaping spaces that influence how people live, work, and interact. At the heart of architecture lies design skill, the ability to think creatively, solve problems, and translate ideas into functional and aesthetic structures. For school and college students aspiring to enter this field, developing strong design skills is the first step towards a rewarding and impactful career.

Design skills in architecture begin with visual thinking and creativity. Architects must imagine spaces before they exist, understanding form, proportion, light, and materials. This creative vision is balanced by technical knowledge, where design ideas are refined through drawings, models, and digital tools such as CAD, BIM, and 3D visualisation software. Students who cultivate both artistic sensibility and technical proficiency gain a strong foundation for architectural studies.

Equally important is problem-solving. Architects design within constraints—limited space, budgets, climate, safety regulations, and client needs. Design skills help students analyse challenges and develop innovative, sustainable solutions. Concepts like green architecture, energy efficiency, and user-centric design are increasingly vital, making design thinking a crucial career skill in today’s environmentally conscious world.

According to Shashank Dixit, an alumnus of Apeejay Institute of Technology-School of Architecture and Planning (AIT-SAP), becoming an architect is the first step towards your contribution to nation-building. “While going into the field, it should be our primary duty to respect building compliances and regulations. We are the ones who are responsible for creating abodes for many lives under one roof and we all should have to understand that focusing our design skills following the building compliances is very necessary for the whole architecture fraternity to contribute their part in nation-building for generations,” he said.

“For school students, early exposure to design can begin through art, mathematics, geometry, model-making, and design-thinking projects. Activities such as sketching buildings, creating layouts, or exploring urban spaces nurture spatial awareness and curiosity. College students, on the other hand, deepen these skills through studio work, critiques, site analysis, and real-world projects that simulate professional practice,” he added.

From a career perspective, strong design skills open doors to diverse opportunities. Architects can specialise in residential, commercial, landscape, interior, or sustainable architecture, or branch into related fields such as urban design, set design, exhibition design, and digital visualisation. With experience, professionals may establish independent practices, work with global firms, or contribute to smart city and infrastructure projects. Design skills are also transferable, allowing architects to explore careers in product design, construction management, and real estate development.
