Education is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is about personal growth and transformation. Deepak, a final-year B.Ed student at Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram, is a testament to this philosophy. Having re-entered the world of academics after two decades, he brings a wealth of professional experience and an inspiring story of perseverance and dedication. In this exclusive conversation, he shares his journey, insights, and experiences at Apeejay Stya University. Read edited excerpts:
What inspired you to pursue a B.Ed after having a successful career in the corporate world?
My decision to pursue a B.Ed was largely influenced by my friends and family. Many of them are government teachers, and I saw the impact they were making in society. After completing my post-graduation from the University of Delhi and a diploma from the International Institute of Fashion Technology (IIFT), I worked in various managerial roles, including my current position as a country head for a Canadian company. However, teaching always intrigued me, and I wanted to give back to the community. That’s when I decided to appear for the CUET exam, cleared the counseling process, and joined Apeejay Stya University.

How has your experience been at Apeejay Stya University?
It has been incredible! The university offers a curriculum aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, ensuring that we receive an education that meets modern standards. The professors here are extremely approachable and supportive, which is quite different from my previous academic experiences. At other universities, it was rare to interact closely with professors, but at Apeejay, they are always available to guide us. Their use of modern teaching techniques like projectors, e-books, and digital tools has enhanced our learning process significantly.
What was it like returning to education after 20 years?
Initially, it was challenging. Stepping into a classroom after two decades brought a mix of excitement and nervousness. But the supportive environment at Apeejay helped me adjust quickly. The professors and fellow students were welcoming, and I soon found myself deeply engaged in the learning process. The interactive teaching methods and the encouragement from faculty members made the transition smooth and enjoyable.
Can you share your internship experience and how it has shaped your perspective on teaching?
My internship was a crucial part of my B.Ed journey. I had the opportunity to teach in both private and government schools for a total of four months. Initially, I was a bit hesitant, but my confidence grew as I interacted with students. One of the most memorable moments was when students shared that I was the first teacher who taught them in an engaging manner rather than simply dictating notes. That feedback was incredibly fulfilling and reinforced my belief in my teaching abilities. The experience also gave me insights into different teaching methodologies and classroom dynamics.
How does Apeejay Stya University prepare its students for the teaching profession?
The university ensures that we are well-equipped for real-world teaching scenarios. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical exposure through internships and interactive learning. The professors emphasise modern pedagogical techniques, and we get hands-on experience with the latest technology in education. More importantly, the faculty is always available to mentor and guide us, ensuring that we step into our roles as teachers with confidence and competence.
