In schools around the world, the celebration of International Day of Yoga has become more than just an annual event — it is now recognised as a valuable educational and cultural practice. One of the primary reasons for celebrating this day in schools is its profound impact on physical health and fitness.
Yoga involves a series of postures (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama) that promote flexibility, strength, and balance. For students who spend much of their day sitting in classrooms, yoga provides a much-needed opportunity to stretch and strengthen their bodies.
It helps in combating issues like obesity and promoting an active lifestyle from a young age. To evoke good practices amongst students, Apeejay School, Tanda Road, Jalandhar marked the International Day of Yoga with fervour and participation from its youngest to middle-grade students.

The International Yoga Day which is celebrated annually on June 21, saw the pre-primary wing of Apeejay alongside students from classes III, IV, and V engage in a series of asanas and pranayama. The activities were designed not only to introduce yoga practices but also to instill the importance of physical and mental well-being from a young age.

Yoga, an ancient discipline originating from India, has gained global recognition for its holistic benefits. At Apeejay School, the celebration underscored the significance of incorporating yoga into daily life for overall wellness. The participating students were guided through various asanas including the Butterfly pose, Cobra pose, Malasana, and rhythmic Om chanting, each contributing to flexibility, strength, and mental clarity.

The tiny tots from the pre-primary wing were particularly enthusiastic, showcasing their flexibility and coordination in simplified versions of the asanas. For many of them, it was a first introduction to the practice, fostering curiosity and a sense of achievement. The older students, classes III to V, demonstrated more advanced poses with guidance from experienced yoga instructors, highlighting their progress in mastering the techniques.

As part of the broader curriculum at Apeejay School, yoga is woven into regular activities to encourage consistency and habit formation among students. The celebration of International Day of Yoga at this school was not merely an event but a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing young minds through ancient wisdom. By embracing yoga, students not only cultivate physical fitness but also develop essential life skills that empower them to thrive in today’s world.
