Fostering flourishing workplaces: The role of the PERMA Model

The model is imperative in creating happy and engaging workplaces

In today’s competitive and fast-paced work environments, organisations are increasingly turning to positive psychology to enhance employee well-being and productivity. At the heart of this movement lies the PERMA model, developed by psychologist Dr Martin Seligman, a pioneer in the field of positive psychology. The acronym PERMA stands for: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment — five key elements that contribute to human flourishing.

Introduced in Seligman’s 2011 book Flourish, the PERMA model provides a scientific framework to understand what drives true well-being. Unlike traditional models focused solely on reducing stress or avoiding burnout, PERMA emphasises cultivating positive experiences and strengths, making it a proactive and holistic approach to mental and emotional wellness.

Each pillar of the model plays a crucial role:

  • Positive Emotion refers to feelings like joy, gratitude, and hope that uplift morale.
  • Engagement involves deep involvement in tasks, often leading to a state of flow.
  • Relationships highlight the importance of authentic human connections in enhancing job satisfaction.
  • Meaning refers to having a sense of purpose, which aligns personal values with professional goals.
  • Accomplishment focuses on setting and achieving goals, building confidence and a sense of competence.

Applications in the workplace

Integrating PERMA into workplace culture can significantly improve both individual and organisational outcomes. For instance, leaders can foster Positive Emotion through appreciation and recognition programs. Providing challenging yet achievable tasks promotes Engagement, while Relationships can be strengthened through teamwork and open communication.

Encouraging employees to align their roles with personal values enhances Meaning, and structured goal-setting nurtures Accomplishment. Many organisations incorporate PERMA through wellness programs, team-building activities, mentorship, and regular feedback mechanisms.

Adopting the PERMA model leads to higher job satisfaction, reduced turnover, improved performance, and increased creativity. More importantly, it cultivates a workplace culture where employees feel valued, connected, and motivated — not just to work harder, but to grow and thrive.

In an era where mental health and employee engagement are top priorities, the PERMA model offers a sustainable and science-backed path to building resilient, happy, and high-performing teams. By shifting the focus from surviving to thriving, PERMA isn’t just a workplace strategy — it’s a transformational mindset every organisation should embrace.
