Recently, Apeejay School, Model Town, organised an engaging and thoughtful classroom session for Class VI A on the monthly theme – Empathy. The session aimed to help students understand the importance of empathy and how it plays a vital role in shaping a kind and inclusive society.
Through a healthy discussion and interactive activities, students explored the three key aspects of empathy – cognitive, emotional, and behavioural. This session taught them empathy and how to apply it in daily life.
Understanding the three dimensions of empathy
The class began by defining empathy as the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Teachers guided students to distinguish between sympathy and empathy. While sympathy is a feeling for someone, empathy is feeling with someone. The students then delved into the three aspects of empathy:
Cognitive Empathy: Understanding another person’s perspective.
Emotional Empathy: Feeling what someone else is feeling.
Behavioural Empathy: Taking compassionate action in response.
These concepts were introduced through real-life examples, relatable situations, and class discussions. Students shared personal experiences and listened to their peers, building a strong sense of connection and understanding.
A safe space for sharing and learning
What made the session impactful was the open and safe environment created by the teacher. Students were encouraged to express their thoughts freely, ask questions, and reflect on their emotions. This openness helped students connect with each other on a deeper level.
The class also talked about how empathy reduces conflicts, encourages cooperation, and builds stronger relationships. By discussing these outcomes, students realised that being empathetic is not just about being nice — it is about making a positive difference in someone’s life.
Bringing empathy into everyday life
The session concluded with a simple yet powerful activity: students made a list of ways they can show empathy at school, at home, and in their community. Some responses included listening without interrupting, helping friends in need, and standing up for someone being treated unfairly.
This activity helped students understand that empathy is not limited to grand gestures. Small acts of kindness and understanding can have a lasting impact.
A step towards a kinder world
The empathy-themed session was a small step in nurturing emotionally intelligent and responsible individuals. By equipping students with the tools to connect with others’ feelings and act kindly, Apeejay School, Model Town, continues to build a strong foundation for compassionate citizenship.
