Fostering a spirit of unity, compassion, and teamwork among students while highlighting the importance of inclusivity in society, Apeejay School, Saket, hosted seven students from the special needs wing of Balvantray Mehta Vidya Bhawan Anguridevi Shersingh Memorial Academy. This was organised on the occasion Founder’s in collaboration with Special Olympics Bharat.

Ms. Nalini Malik, PGT Home Science teacher and in charge of the Interact Club, shared how this initiative has grown over the past two years. “These children have a separate wing, and everything is different for them. Last year, we visited their school, and I took my interactors along with me. Now, for the past two years, these children have been visiting our school, and we alternate visits—sometimes we go to their school, and sometimes they come to ours.”

The day began with a warm welcome during the school assembly, where the special needs students were introduced and celebrated for their participation. Ms. Malik explained that their inclusion in school events stems from a belief rooted in the school’s values: “We invited them to our Founder’s Day event because our respected Late Dr Stya Paul, Founder Chairman , Apeejay Stya Group & Apeejay Education, believed in creating an inclusive society.”

The students engaged in various games, including Pittu, basketball, and throwball, alongside members of the Interact Club. “We mix the groups, so it’s not about one school or the other, but rather about everyone participating together,” said Ms. Malik. These activities encouraged interaction and teamwork, helping break down barriers and foster friendships.

The excitement and joy were palpable as students played together. Ms. Malik emphasised how the interactions have evolved: “In the past, some of our students may have seen their visits as work or compulsion, but now they genuinely look forward to the interaction. They go out of their way to play with them and offer help if needed.”

The celebration not only allowed the students to have fun but also built confidence and strengthened bonds between the two schools. It served to honour the school’s Founder Sir, reinforcing the values of compassion and teamwork. Ms. Malik added, “I’ve made it a point to teach our students not to see themselves as superior but to self-reflect. While we’re doing this on a small scale, I believe this experience will inspire them to do philanthropic work as they grow older.”

The event concluded with heartfelt messages about the importance of inclusivity in education and the broader community. As Ms. Malik noted, “We are working toward building a compassionate and selfless community.”

Overall, the Founder’s Day celebration at Apeejay School, Saket, was a memorable occasion that successfully promoted inclusivity and fostered a spirit of philanthropy. By engaging with the special needs community, the school demonstrated its commitment to creating a supportive environment where every student can thrive, building a more inclusive society for the future.
