Apeejay Institute of Design (AID) continually emphasises the holistic development of its students. In this pursuit, the GDP 4th semester students of Fashion Design recently undertook an inspiring project as part of their Design Studio and workshop curriculum. The project focused on designing occasion wear, which not only enhanced the students’ understanding of aesthetics and garment construction but also honed their skills in material selection and the creation of cohesive ensembles.

The project was distinct in its approach, requiring students to work with a carefully selected theme derived from thorough trend research. This theme inspired every aspect of the design process, from the story and silhouettes to the colours, textures, motifs, ornamentations, and other intricate design details. The students were tasked with developing an Indo-western style collection that would appeal to the cosmopolitan lifestyle of a young Indian woman, particularly for party wear.

Throughout the project, students engaged in extensive research and sourcing of exclusive materials appropriate for their collections. The design process included pattern making, allowing students to translate their creative visions into tangible garments. This hands-on experience was crucial in developing their technical skills and understanding the complexities of garment construction.

The culmination of the project saw the creation of carefully designed pieces that were not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical and suitable for modern party wear. The entire process, from conceptualization to the final construction of the garments, provided the students with a comprehensive learning experience.

Akanksha Gaur, a GDP-FD (IV semester) student, shared her experience, highlighting the project’s impact on her learning journey. “Since occasion wear was the last project of the semester, it gave me ample opportunity to showcase whatever I had learnt throughout the semester. The complete process of design was applied in designing the range of garments. Application of principles of flat pattern making, surface ornamentation, and assembly of the ensemble was understood and applied. This project has given impetus to my confidence and I am looking forward to more such projects in coming semesters,” she expressed enthusiastically.

The project on occasion wear stands as a testament to Apeejay Institute of Design’s commitment to providing its students with practical, industry-relevant experiences. By engaging in such comprehensive projects, students not only enhance their technical skills but also build confidence in their abilities to create innovative and marketable fashion designs. This holistic approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of the fashion industry and excel in their future careers.
