This summer vacation, I visited Babulnath Temple in Mumbai. Legend says it has a Swayambhu Shivling, which has existed here since the 12th century. The ancient Shiv Mandir is situated on a hillock near Girgaum Chowpatty, making it one of the oldest temples in the city. The temple’s serene ambiance and historical significance drew me in. Its timings are from 5 am every day.

In the main complex, there is a fascinating mix of various deities, including Vishnu, Shiva, Hanuman, and others. Statues of gods like Saraswati and Parvati were buried underground, later unearthed by Raja Thakur. I had the privilege of participating in the traditional aarti, offering Bilva leaves, and immersing myself in the sacred rituals of Hinduism.
The temple’s architecture is a masterpiece, fully carved in marble with intricate designs that tell stories of centuries past. As I explored, I also visited the nearby Hanu Bhavan, Kamala Nehru Park, and Hanuman Dwar, each adding layers to my cultural experience.
A small museum within the temple complex showcased artifacts related to Hanuman and other deities, providing a glimpse into the rich history of the region. The visit offered not just a spiritual retreat but also a chance to appreciate the cultural and religious heritage that this ancient temple encapsulates. It’s a place where tradition and history harmoniously coexist, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a deeper connection with India’s cultural tapestry.
