Apeejay Institute of Technology – School of Architecture & Planning (AIT-SAP), Greater Noida recently hosted its prestigious annual event, Apeejay Festival of Ideas by Ignited Minds (AFIIM) Season 6. The two-day festival, themed Towards a Sustainable Future, welcomed esteemed architects from India and abroad, providing an invaluable platform for knowledge exchange and innovative discussions on sustainability in architecture.

The event commenced with an inspiring message from the Chief Patron, Mrs Sushma Berlia, Chairman, Apeejay Stya & Svran Group, Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram, who highlighted the Festival as an invaluable platform from the exchange of knowledge, shedding light on the path towards harmonious and sustainable future.

In his address, Prof. Vivek Sabherwal, Director of AIT-SAP, emphasised the pressing issue of climate change and the vital role architects play in mitigating its impact. He urged students to draw from India’s age-old traditions of reusing and recycling, advocating for the adoption of a circular economy—an essential component of a sustainable future.

Distinguished speakers from across the globe graced the event. The Chief Guest on the first day was Ar. Gajanand Ram, Vice President of the Council of Architecture (COA), while the second day was honored by eminent architect Ar. Rafiq Azam from Bangladesh. The Guests of Honor included renowned architects Ar. Sanjay Prakash, Ar. Shyam Khandekar from the Netherlands, Ar. Soumitro Ghosh from Bangalore, and Ar. Jannat Zui from Bangladesh.

Ar. Rafiq Azam encouraged the audience to perceive architecture not merely through the lens of sustainability but as a celebration of nature, culture, and people. His insights inspired students to rethink conventional architectural practices and integrate holistic perspectives into their designs. Similarly, Ar. Jannat Zui urged students to shift their perspective from ego to eco, envisioning their projects as solutions that extend beyond the confines of the architectural discipline.

Ar. Shyam Khandekar challenged students to critically assess the necessity of construction itself. He advised them to first understand the site, the city, and its people before initiating any design. Ar. Soumitro Ghosh reminded young professionals that the scale of a project should never limit their creativity, emphasising that the right ideas emerge when they align with the right moment and context.

In his concluding remarks, COA Vice President Ar. Gajanand Ram urged students to adopt an inclusive approach by engaging with communities and understanding their needs. He emphasized that architects must ensure their work has a meaningful and lasting impact on society.

The festival also brought together students from various colleges and young professionals who actively participated in the event. Attendees showcased their work and competed in various architectural competitions. The event culminated in a grand cultural program organised by the students, adding vibrancy to the academic discussions.

The Apeejay Festival of Ideas by Ignited Minds served as a powerful reminder that architecture is not merely about constructing buildings but about shaping a sustainable and inclusive world. The collective wisdom and inspiration shared during the event have undoubtedly paved the way for a more thoughtful and responsible future in the field of architecture.
