Exercise your way to a fitter tomorrow

Here are some easily doable exercises that would help counter the weight gain this winter

Weight gain is synonymous with the winter season. Afterall, both start with the alphabet ‘W’. The season offers delicious sweets and foods soaked in ghee that leads to satisfaction in the heart and weight on the belly.

However, the magic of the winter season is that none of this weight shows until it is mid-February. It is then that the long coats and jackets are finally dropped with the ‘drop’ in the temperature and then in a moment of hysteria, we are unable to recognise our real selves in the mirror.

This is followed by regret and a half-hearted long battle of diet and regime to somehow be fit by the summers. But every aim in this world is doable with some foundation steps first.

So here are some exercises that will kick-start your fitness journey into the shortest month, and help you slay this spring! These exercises can be done easily anywhere, especially at home. They do not need any equipment other than a determined heart.

 1. Running

Many people tend to go for long walks, calling it as exercise. And they are not entirely wrong. Long walks are an exercise for the legs and are certainly therapeutic for the mind but it isn’t that effective for fat loss. Reason being,  we tend to walk at our own leisurely pace with frequent breaks in between.

What will help more, is a determined run for a set time period say 15 minutes. This will not only enhance the cardio-vascular system but will also help in the overall fat loss from the body.

And as they say no better trainer or toner than a good run!

2. Sit-ups

Sit ups are not as easy as they seem. But the good news is they aren’t that tough either. Ask for an instructor’s help if need be or check the correct form in a fitness video at YouTube.

Strong legs are the foundation for a strong upper body. Sit ups tone the body and aid in effective running, giving you more endurance, thereby helping in cutting that belly fat. It strengthens the thigh muscles in particular the quadriceps which help in myriad ways but the biggest is, by making you feel more confident right away. This confidence gets you going more committed towards your exercise goals

3. Jumping Jacks

Usually seen as a warm exercise for kids. But Jumping Jacks is a great medicine for the heart. It warms the entire body and if done in three sets of 50 each, you will begin to see it is a total exercise, shaping the entire body.

It is a great stamina enhancer and is also the best feel good exercise you can have. Play some good music and jump away in calculated sets of three. Burn away calories and fat and say Hi to a healthier heart!

4. Bend and touch the ground

A simple thousand year old stretch that is still so tough to achieve for most. Just bend down and ensure that your knees are straight, then try to touch your feet.

Don’t you suddenly feel exhausted?

The beauty of this yogic stretch is that not only does it open the flexibility of the body which in turn saves you from many health issues but this exercise is a great belly fat cutter.

As you bend down and compress the middle portion of your body, there is direct action on all the excess fat around the belly and the waist. Do this for a month and see the results yourself!

5. Abs

After you begin to feel good with the progress made through these exercises, it is time to take the problem head on. There are various variations of this simple exercise but start with the basic one. You can even check a video of Cristiano Ronaldo on YouTube where he teaches the right way of doing ab crunches.

3 weeks of doing abs alternatively and you will be amazed to see a huge chunk of your belly and waist fat disappear. It is also said that abs exercises directly activate the solar plexus chakra which makes a person more confident, courageous and magnetic.

What are you waiting for then?

A fitter, stronger and more aesthetic body is calling out to you for a healthy and energetic tomorrow.
