Awareness events are crucial in fostering awareness and empathy among students. They provide a platform to address pressing social issues, encourage open discussions, and promote a culture of acceptance. By engaging in such conversations, students develop confidence, learn to challenge societal norms and contribute to creating a more inclusive school environment.
For the same, the Interact Club of Apeejay School, Noida organised a group discussion on Beyond Appearances: Empowering Youth to Combat Body Shaming. The discussion aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of body shaming, promote self-acceptance, and encourage a supportive school environment.
Students explored various aspects of body shaming, starting with its definition and the different forms it can take. They analysed how societal beauty standards and media play a significant role in shaping perceptions of the “ideal” body image. The psychological impact of body shaming was a key focus, with discussions on its effects on mental health, including low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Many students shared personal experiences and real-life examples, fostering an atmosphere of openness and empathy.
The role of social media was another crucial topic, as students debated its dual impact — both as a medium that perpetuates unrealistic beauty ideals and as a platform that promotes body positivity. The discussion emphasised the importance of self-love, self-acceptance, and prioritising one’s abilities over appearance as ways to combat body shaming.
In the end, the participants suggested practical solutions like encouraging healthy lifestyle habits without linking them solely to looks and creating safe spaces where students can express themselves freely. The event successfully instilled a sense of responsibility among students to support their peers and stand against body shaming. Many pledged to foster a culture of acceptance and positivity within the school, making this discussion a meaningful step toward change.
