The Psychology Department of Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar, observed World Down Syndrome Day, with the aim of raising awareness and fostering sensitivity toward individuals with Down Syndrome. The event emphasised inclusivity, understanding, and support for people whose physical and mental development progresses at a different pace.
Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra, in her address, highlighted the significance of World Down Syndrome Day, which was officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. She explained how this global initiative seeks to promote acceptance, empowerment, and equal opportunities for individuals with Down Syndrome, encouraging society to embrace diversity.
The event featured Ms. Damini Tiwari and Ms. Tanya, both esteemed counseling psychologists, as resource speakers. Their insightful discussions provided students with a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with Down Syndrome and the importance of creating an inclusive environment.

Ms. Damini Tiwari emphasised the crucial role of emotional and social support in empowering individuals with down syndrome. She stressed that instead of making comparisons, society should recognise their unique abilities and encourage them to develop self-confidence. Speaking on the topic ‘Understanding Individual Differences’, she urged students to acknowledge and respect diversity in human capabilities, fostering an atmosphere of positivity and encouragement.
Ms. Tanya addressed another pressing issue—drug abuse. She highlighted its detrimental effects on mental and physical health, warning students about the risks of addiction. She explained how substance abuse not only affects the individual but also disrupts families and communities, urging young minds to make informed and responsible choices.
The session saw active participation from students of the Psychology Department, who engaged in meaningful discussions and asked insightful questions. The speakers responded with valuable advice, leaving students with a greater sense of awareness and responsibility toward supporting individuals with down syndrome and making informed life choices.

As the event concluded, Sandeep Singh, President, Psychology Forum, delivered a heartfelt Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to the speakers and all participants for making the event impactful.
Dr. Neerja Dhingra commended the dedicated efforts of Ms. Niharika and Ms. Harpreet Kaur from the Psychology Department for organising the program successfully. She reiterated the importance of compassion, inclusivity, and social awareness, encouraging students to apply these values in their daily lives.
The event proved to be an enriching and inspiring experience, reinforcing the need for empathy, education, and advocacy in building a more inclusive society.
