The Education Ministry in India has recommended new guidelines to promote inclusivity and celebrate the diversity of students with various learning needs. These guidelines entail adapting the curriculum to be culturally and socially accommodating, encouraging teachers to acquire the knowledge and skills to teach all students in a class, and bolstering resource centres with assistive devices.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has formulated the National Guidelines and Implementation Framework on Equitable and Inclusive Education in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This policy envisions the transformation of India through the provision of high-quality, equitable, and inclusive education, ensuring that students with diverse learning needs can thrive.
These guidelines, unveiled recently, specifically target children from socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. These groups are further classified based on factors such as gender identities, sociocultural identities, disabilities, geographical identities, and economic conditions.
The primary objective is to cultivate a sense of belonging, respect, and acceptance of diversity by acknowledging, identifying, and nurturing the capabilities of every individual. Additionally, the guidelines aim to sensitise stakeholders and enhance teachers’ capacities to address the diverse learning needs of students from varying backgrounds.
Furthermore, the guidelines advocate for well-equipped resource personnel, such as speech therapists and occupational therapists, in schools. They also call for state-backed vocational exposure and skill training for students from socioeconomically disadvantaged groups.
Collaboration between schools, NGOs, and organisations in health, education, and social welfare is emphasised for necessary interventions. Local communities and organisations are encouraged to step in where immediate resources and services are needed, with media partnerships suggested to promote awareness of inclusive education.
