Dating back to the 12th century, Gagron Fort stands as a testament to architectural brilliance, nestled amidst the serene waters, it remains the sole fort in North India encircled entirely by water. Beyond its engineering marvel, the fort stands as a pivotal landmark in India’s history and culture. Having served as the stronghold of the Khinchi dynasty for nearly three centuries, Gagron Fort witnessed the tumultuous tides of over 14 battles and endured two jauhars, epitomizing resilience amidst adversity. Echoes of its vibrant yet turbulent past resonate within its walls, with tales of valor and sacrifice woven into its very fabric. Local lore speaks of King Achal Das’s lingering presence, as whispers of his hookah smoke linger in the air, while the ethereal presence of the women who embraced self-immolation continues to haunt the premises.
Adjacent to the Gagron Fort lies the shrine of Mittheshah, a revered Sufi saint from the 15th century, commissioned by Emperor Akbar in 1580. This sacred site draws devotees year-round, with the Islamic month of Muharram witnessing a burst of vibrant festivities and fairs in honor of the saint. As you traverse through the historical tapestry of Jhalawar, make sure to pay homage to the ancient Sun Temple in Jhalrapatan, adding another layer to your journey through time.

For those embarking on this historical pilgrimage, Jhalawar is conveniently located 260 kilometers from Bhopal Airport, with a travel time of approximately three hours from Kota city via NH52. Travelers can opt for a scenic drive down to Jhalawar, immersing themselves in the rustic charm of the countryside. Alternatively, the nearest railhead, Bhawani Mandi, offers easy accessibility for those arriving by train, ensuring a seamless journey to explore the rich heritage and cultural tapestry of Jhalawar and its surrounding marvels.
