Nutrition plays a key role in supporting a student’s growth, energy levels, and overall performance. Among the many food options available, millets stand out as a highly nutritious yet often overlooked superfood. Their rich nutrient profile makes them especially beneficial for school-going children and teenagers.

Students today have jam-packed schedules, according to Ms Shriya Maini, Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce & Management at Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, and Founder of Immuno Eats. “From early morning school and tuition classes to physical activities and late-night study sessions, their energy demands are constant. Naturally, they often feel hungry and tend to reach for quick snacks. Sadly, most of these options — chips, biscuits, and instant noodles — are highly processed, low in nutrients, and heavy in salt and sugar,” she said.
Millets can make a big difference
Unlike refined grains like wheat or rice, millets are rich in fibre, the educator shared. “This helps students feel full for a longer time, reducing the urge to munch frequently on unhealthy food. More importantly, millets are a powerhouse of essential nutrients. They are packed with protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins — all of which are vital for a student’s physical and mental development,” Ms Maini explained.

Iron supports the oxygen supply to the brain, calcium strengthens growing bones, and protein aids in building muscles and repairing tissues. Millets also have a low glycaemic index, which means they help regulate blood sugar levels and maintain consistent energy throughout the day.
But nutrition alone isn’t enough. For students to enjoy millets, they must be presented in a fun and tasty way. That’s where parents play a big role. Millet-based dosas, idlis, energy bars, and laddoos can be delicious alternatives to packaged snacks. When made with care and creativity, these recipes can tempt even the pickiest eaters.
“Incorporating millets into a student’s daily diet can improve their focus, stamina, and overall well-being. It’s a simple switch with powerful benefits. We constantly explore millet-based snack options that are both healthy and enjoyable,” Ms Maini shared.
Remember, millets are more than just grains — they are a nutritious and natural solution for young, growing minds. With a little innovation in the kitchen, this ancient superfood can become every student’s favourite fuel. So, the next time your child reaches for a snack, make it millet!
