In summers, keeping toddlers cool and hydrated becomes a top priority for every parent. The scorching heat can quickly drain their energy, making refreshing drinks essential. While it’s tempting to reach for ready-made beverages, many are loaded with preservatives, artificial sweeteners, or aerated content, all of which aren’t ideal for little ones. Instead, natural, homemade drinks offer a healthier alternative, providing the perfect balance of hydration, taste, and essential nutrients. Plus, they’re easy to make and super tasty!

According to Ms Nidhi Ghai, Incharge, Apeejay Rhythms Kinderworld, Jalandhar, it is necessary to promote natural drinks over aerated drinks. “Natural drinks boost immunity and improve the digestive system, whereas aerated drinks are harmful to health. It can promote type II diabetes, lead to tooth decay, and, of course, cause acidity, which is ultimately harmful to the digestive system. This is especially true for toddlers,” Ms Ghai shared.

Here are five simple and healthy summer drinks that your toddler will love.

Coconut water with lemon and mint

Coconut water is nature’s energy drink. It is packed with electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, making it perfect for hydration. Add a few drops of fresh lemon juice and some chopped mint to enhance the flavour. This refreshing drink cools the body, aids digestion, and boosts immunity.

Watermelon and basil cooler

Watermelon is over 90% water, making it an excellent summer fruit. Blend fresh watermelon chunks with a few basil leaves and a splash of lime juice. This naturally sweet drink is rich in vitamins A and C, helping with hydration and digestion. The basil adds a fresh twist and provides antibacterial benefits.

Aam panna (raw mango cooler)

A traditional favourite, aam panna is perfect for hot days. Boil raw mangoes, extract the pulp, and blend it with jaggery (a natural sweetener) and a pinch of roasted cumin powder. Dilute it with water for a light, refreshing drink. This drink helps prevent heat strokes and supports digestion.

Cucumber and mint buttermilk (chaas)

Buttermilk is a cooling and probiotic-rich drink that promotes gut health. Blend buttermilk with grated cucumber, chopped mint, and a little roasted cumin powder. This savoury drink is hydrating and soothing, making it ideal for hot summer afternoons.

Berry and yoghurt smoothie

For a creamy, nutrient-packed option, blend fresh berries (like strawberries or blueberries) with plain yoghurt and a bit of coconut water. This smoothie is rich in antioxidants, calcium, and probiotics. The natural sweetness of the berries makes it a toddler favourite, while yoghurt offers a cooling effect.
