Some dreams are born on the classroom bench. Others — like that of Rakin Anwar — quietly gather the tide until they swell into something extraordinary. An alumnus of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, Rakin’s path to the Merchant Navy wasn’t marked by academic medals but by a relentless spirit, a love for robotics, and a deep resolve to prove himself. In this open-hearted conversation, he shares how his school shaped him into what he is today.
Rakin, congratulations on clearing the IMU-CET! What are you pursuing currently?
I’ve recently cleared the IMU-CET — the entrance exam for the Merchant Navy. Right now, I’m in the process of choosing the right company or college for my training. This will be my graduation course.
What inspired you to choose PCM in school and lean toward science?
Honestly, I’ve been into robotics since Class 6. That curiosity pulled me naturally towards science, especially Physics. I’ve always liked experimenting with things.
You say you weren’t academically inclined — how would you describe your school life then?
I wasn’t the most academic kid, to be honest. But I had a scientific mind and loved hands-on work. I also trained in judo and won bronze and silver in zonal tournaments. So yeah — best at everything except studies!
Any favourite subject you remember fondly?
Physics was my favourite. Despite my fluctuating grades, my teachers — in Physics, Chemistry, and Maths — gave me attention and support. That really helped improve my performance.
Looking back, what’s one piece of advice you’d give to current Apeejay students?
Just listen to your teachers — they’re doing more for you than you realise. And enjoy school life while you can. You don’t know what college will be like or what hardships are coming, so cherish these years.
You’ve clearly evolved. Do you think your past struggles have motivated you now?
Absolutely. Maybe that’s why we go through rough patches — to help us take the next chapter more seriously. I want to correct my past mistakes.
What would your message be to any student aspiring to join the Merchant Navy?
Only do this if you truly want to. Don’t follow a trend or rat race. Life in the Merchant Navy is tough. If you’re not mentally prepared, you might want to quit on Day One. So know yourself first.
