He is a water baby with a difference. His skills and speed during swimming crashes the spirit of his adversaries amidst the ripples. Meet Angad Raj, presently studying in Class V at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. In a candid interview with us, he shares how he swayed through the challenges during the competition that led him to the final victory.

Tell us about your recent achievements.

Recently, I achieved notable success in sports, winning a gold medal in 50m kickboxingand asilver medal in 50m freestyle swimming. These accomplishments reflect my dedication, hard work, and consistent training.

How did Apeejay School support your journey in swimming?

My swimming journey began in the school’s pool, where I received foundational training. Currently, my Physical Education teacher guides me with dry training exercises, enhancing my strength and technique. The school’s support, facilities, and mentorship have been instrumental in developing my skills and boosting my confidence in competitive swimming.

Who is your inspiration and why?

I train with the DDSC club, where my coach serves as my inspiration. His constant encouragement pushes me to improve my swimming skills daily. His dedication, guidance, and motivation inspire me to work harder, stay disciplined, and strive for excellence in every practice and competition.

 Who is your favourite swimmer?

My favourite swimmer is Michael Phelps, widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in swimming history. I admire his discipline, perseverance, and ability to perform under pressure, making him a true role model.

Share your training regime.

I train six days a week at the Pacific Sports Complex, swimming 3000–4000 metres and practising various strokes for three hours daily. Additionally, I do daily dry training at home, including free-weight exercises, weight training, and muscle conditioning, to build strength, endurance, and overall performance in swimming.

How has this sport changed you?

It has made me more disciplined and focused, teaching me the value of dedication and consistent effort. It has also instilled an understanding of the importance of sportsmanship, healthy habits, and proper nutrition. These lessons have positively influenced both my athletic performance and my overall lifestyle.

What are the challenges you face during the competition?

The biggest challenge I face during competitions is maintaining consistency and focus throughout the race. I overcome challenges in competitions by concentrating solely on my swimming, staying fully present in each stroke and turn. By letting go of concerns about the outcome or other competitors, I maintain focus and consistency, allowing my training, technique, and determination to guide my performance throughout the race.
