Delhi NCR school holidays extended amid severe cold wave and dense fog 

Winter has tightened its grip across North India, prompting authorities to extend school holidays across the Delhi NCR region in the interest of students’ safety and well-being. Persistent cold wave conditions, coupled with dense fog and reduced visibility during early morning hours, have raised serious concerns about daily commuting for school-going children.

According to official announcements, schools in Delhi will remain closed until 15 January, as directed by the Directorate of Education (DoE), Government of NCT of Delhi. The winter vacation, which began on 1 January, is part of the academic calendar for the 2025–26 session. However, the extension reflects prevailing weather conditions rather than routine scheduling.

Every year, the first half of January witnesses extremely low temperatures in the Delhi NCR region, often accompanied by heavy fog that disrupts road, rail, and air traffic. Early morning school schedules, especially for younger students, become challenging under such circumstances. Limited visibility, icy winds, and prolonged exposure to cold significantly increase health and safety risks.

The primary objective of extending the winter break is to protect students—particularly those in pre-primary, primary, and middle classes—from cold-related illnesses. Medical experts note that harsh winter mornings can lead to coughs, colds, flu, and respiratory infections, which spread rapidly among children.

Authorities have advised parents to remain alert to official updates and avoid sending children out unnecessarily during severe weather conditions. Schools are expected to resume regular classes only after temperatures stabilise and visibility improves, ensuring safer travel for students and staff alike.

Meanwhile, parents are encouraged to keep children warm, maintain proper nutrition, and limit exposure to cold and pollution during this period. As weather patterns continue to fluctuate, further advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.

For now, the extended winter break offers students a much-needed pause from early morning routines while prioritising their health and safety amid challenging winter conditions across the Delhi NCR.
