Delhi-based educator empowers Filipinos through Martial Arts

Martial Arts, a discipline encompassing a wide range of combat practices, have a rich history in India. Their origins can be traced back to ancient times when various forms of combat were an integral part of Indian culture. Practices like Kalaripayattu in Kerala, Silambam in Tamil Nadu, and Gatka in Punjab, have been passed down through generations, evolving and adapting to the changing times.

These ancient forms of Martial Arts were not only means of self-defense but also served as a holistic approach to physical fitness, mental well-being, and spiritual development. Over the centuries, they have continued to flourish and find relevance in modern society, gaining recognition on both national and international platforms.
In a momentous turn of events, Mr Vijender Mahalwal, a dedicated Physical Education teacher at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, was accorded a prestigious invitation by the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in India. He was a Resource Speaker for the Basic Martial Arts and Close Combat Workshop. The impressive invitation is a testament to his prowess in the field and his unwavering commitment.
Mr Vijender Mahalwal’s Journey:
A stalwart in the domain of physical fitness, Mahalwal has devoted decades to honing his skills in various forms of Martial Arts and Yoga. His journey commenced in his early years, driven by a fervent passion for combat sports. Through rigorous training and unwavering dedication, he climbed the ranks, eventually emerging as a recognised authority in the field.


He says, “I am a five-time Black Belt Champion recognised by South Korea. I have been at it since 1993. Thrice I bagged the National gold medals in the field of Martial Arts as well. With this, I am a National referee for the Taekwondo Federation of India too.” Interestingly, the educator stated that he had been a very docile kid. His passion to learn the arts was fuelled by observing his cousin during summer vacations many years back.
At present, his expertise in teaching Martial Arts has not only produced skilled practitioners but has also inspired countless individuals to embrace the discipline, instigating a ripple effect of empowerment and personal growth.

The Gender and Development Programme:
The Basic Martial Arts and Close Combat Workshop, a pivotal initiative undertaken by the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in India, is part of their Gender and Development (GAD) programme. This programme is designed to address the pressing issue of violence against women and children, a challenge faced by societies worldwide. Its primary objective is to engage Overseas Filipinos and empower them with the knowledge and skills needed to combat such violence effectively.

By inviting Mr Mahalwal, the Embassy focused on leveraging his extensive expertise to provide participants with invaluable insights and practical training. The workshop is structured to cover a wide spectrum of topics, including fundamental techniques, self-defense strategies, and the psychological aspects of combat.
The Significance of Practicing Martial Arts:
Martial Arts provide a comprehensive approach to personal development. It instills discipline, enhances physical fitness, sharpens mental acuity, and fosters a sense of responsibility and respect for others. Moreover, it cultivates a strong sense of self-confidence and equips individuals with the tools to face adversity with resilience and grace.

Mr Mahalwal’s selection for the opportunity is not only a personal triumph but also a witness to the universal significance of Martial Arts as a tool for empowerment and self-defense. His participation in this noble endeavour underscores the global reach and enduring relevance of these ancient practices. Through initiatives like the Gender and Development programme, the Embassy is fostering a community of empowered individuals, equipped to effect positive change in the world.
