Debating world issues today to solve them tomorrow

Model United Nations commonly known as the MUN is an excellent simulation exercise for students to learn about the working of the United Nations in a practical and immensely engaging manner. Geared in formal attire, students debate and discuss issues flaring up the globe as well as try to arrive at a possible conclusion, if not solution. Through such an interesting exercise, students learn the value of teamwork and research alongside intellectual skills.  

Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park is long known for leaving no stone unturned to provide its students with the best possible learning environment. Keeping up with the latest exercises in education, the school recently organised Crux MUN 2022, a two day event for students to debate, discuss and discover.

The event began with the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest Mr. Manjeev Singh Puri, a Distinguished Fellow and Member of the Advisory Board of TERI, accompanied by Principal Mr. Sandeep Singh Kathuria, and Vice Principal Mrs. Shalini Agarwal.  The lighting of the lamp was followed by the wonderful dancers of the school performing a mesmerising Ganesh Vandana.

Mr. Manjeev Singh Puri then delighted the audience with stories from his tenure as the Indian Foreign Ambassador to the United Nations. He discussed various world issues with the budding leaders. He also called a few students on the stage and spoke to them about the various issues the United Nations works on.

A short video was played thereafter displaying the rich legacy of Crux MUN and its importance in putting Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park on the right path of holistic education. This was followed by Secretary General of the Conference, Mr. Pranav Gaikwad finally declaring the two day inter-school conference open.

The conference saw passionate and intellectually intense deliberations on several global issues ranging from the situation of women under the Taliban in Afghanistan, refugees in Palestine, use of rape in the Russia-Ukraine war and the Aksai-Chin conflict, among others. Several students of Apeejay Panchsheel Park are a part of the International Press Department and write extensively on the various problems plaguing modern society. The articles have been published in Volume 1 of newly launched official newsletter for Crux MUN 2022 – ‘The Crux of it’ 

Highlighting the plight of women in Islamic socities, Jayanti Yadav wrote on the topic, ‘Women and Islam’, narrating how anti-muslim hatred continues to spread like wildfire and the women of the community continue to ceaselessly burn from it.

Another topic covered is ‘Drugs Aren’t Cool’ in which Dhruv Mishra of the International Press and an Apeejay student sheds light on the impact of glorification of drug use in Western media.

Speaking about the conference, Mr. Sandeep Singh Kathuria, Principal at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park said, “MUN is an educational simulation in which students are acquainted with diplomacy, international relations and the United Nations. Through MUN, students are taught the nobler aspects of life such as teamwork, leadership and critical thinking. The conference will ignite young minds to bring a wave of change in the coming years. CRUX MUN 2022 will help each delegate voice their opinions and perspectives in and beyond the committee room.”

Further, Mrs. Shalini Agarwal, Vice Principal said, “MUN conference simulation has created a global community of ambitious and talented young diplomats, who earnestly strive to change the world for the better, treading in the footsteps of the United Nations diplomats.” She also added, “We at CRUX MUN are driven by an educational mission complementing diplomacy, research, public speaking and other social well-being skills. I am delighted to see my beloved students take initiative and adapt to a new role to make CRUX MUN 2022 an enriching and memorable experience.”
