The halls of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, buzzed with the excitement and intellectual fervour of DebateAble 2024, an Inter-school English debate competition that drew participation from 35 schools across the Delhi-NCR. This year’s theme – Teen Curfews: Balancing Safety Measures or Unjust Limitations? – provided a fertile ground for spirited discussions, challenging students to delve deep into a contentious issue affecting their own lives.
The competition, which began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, was graced by a distinguished panel of judges, bringing a mix of literary, academic, and professional expertise to the table. The panel included Mr Neelesh Kulkarni, a renowned author and theatre artist, Dr Ruby Makhija, a TEDx speaker, and founder of Why Waste Wednesdays Foundation, Ms Videsha Kemkar, a seasoned media professional, Ms Shiuli Chowdhury, an associate professor of English at Kamala Nehru College, and Ms Tina Barua, head of HR and Production at MacMillan India.

Dynamic Debates Illuminate the Issue
The debaters were divided into two groups, each passionately arguing for and against the imposition of teen curfews. Advocates for the motion presented compelling arguments about the necessity of curfews for safety and societal order. In contrast, opponents challenged this view, arguing that such restrictions unjustly limit teenage freedom and autonomy.
In Group A, the debate spotlight shone on Arush Dua of DPS RK Puram and Saanvi Khurana of Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, who both emerged victorious, advocating effectively for the motion. Conversely, Ananya Verma of Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, impressed the judges with her articulate opposition, winning her category.
Group B saw Reet Devgan of Indraprastha International School champion the cause for curfews, while Ayush Aryan of Modern Public School successfully argued against the motion, earning accolades for his persuasive skills and deep understanding of the issue.
Judges Comment Participants’ Skills
The judges lauded all participants for their eloquence and enthusiasm in tackling the debate topics. Mr. Neelesh Kulkarni, in particular, praised the debaters’ oratory skills and the depth of their arguments, highlighting the importance of a conversational tone to truly connect with the audience.

DebateAble 2024 was more than just a competition; it was a dynamic platform that engaged students in critical thinking and articulate expression. It highlighted the importance of informed discussion and open dialogue in navigating societal challenges, emphasizing how youth engagement is crucial in shaping a more discerning and empathetic society.
The event underscored the necessity of providing young minds with opportunities to express themselves and debate on issues that directly impact their lives and communities. As students left the halls of Apeejay School, they carried with them not just trophies, but also a deeper understanding and a strengthened resolve to be active, informed citizens.
This year’s DebateAble not only showcased the intellectual capabilities of our youth but also set a high standard for discourse, proving that even the most complex issues can be addressed when young minds are encouraged to explore and express their thoughts freely.
