With sheer determination and remarkable willpower, Class XI student Himani from Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri has proved that passion and perseverance can lead to victory. She clinched the gold medal in cycling at the district level, despite having only a few practice sessions on a road bike. Alongside cycling, she also excels in swimming, archery, and table tennis, making her one of the most promising young athletes of the school.
In this interview, Himani talks about her inspiring journey, training routine, and the motivation that keeps her going. Read edited excerpts:

When did you first start learning cycling, and how did the competition happen?
I always enjoyed normal cycling as a child, but the road bike is something very different, it’s meant for long-distance racing. Honestly, I had never trained much on it. Just three or four days before the district-level competition, I got a chance to practice. I only rode it three times before the race. On the day of the event, I started at the very end and thought I wouldn’t be able to make it. But midway, something in me said, don’t give up, you can still do this. I pushed myself harder and, to my surprise, I crossed everyone and secured the first position.
Who has been your biggest support in this journey?
My father and my coach. They were the ones who taught me how to handle the road bike. My father especially encouraged me to never lose confidence, no matter what position I start in. Their guidance helped me push through when I felt like giving up.
How do you prepare yourself in terms of stamina and training?
For stamina, there’s no shortcut, it’s only practice. The more you train, the better your performance gets. Earlier, I would wake up at 4 am to run, attend school, and then head for my archery and triathlon practice in the evening. After that, I would study till late at night. Balancing studies and sports is tough, but time management is the key.
Do you follow a special diet?
Not really. I eat a regular diet like anyone else at home. There’s nothing extraordinary in terms of nutrition, though of course, consistency in food and sleep matters.

You are excelling in multiple sports. Tell us about your other achievements.
Yes, apart from cycling, I am a state-level swimmer. Last year, I won the third position in the 50m freestyle event. Currently, I am also preparing for the CBSE national championship in archery. In school, I enjoy table tennis as well. I like exploring different games because each one teaches me something new.
How supportive has your school been in your journey?
My school has always encouraged me to balance both academics and sports. I still remember when I returned with the gold medal, my principal asked me which game I would finally choose, since I was excelling in so many. That kind of recognition motivates me even more.
What message would you like to give to your juniors?
My only advice would be never give up. When I was cycling that day, I kept telling myself, I can do it, I will do it. That mindset made all the difference. No matter how difficult a challenge looks, consistency and belief can take you to the top.
