Young children engage in very meaningful activities involving art and creativity; however, they only symbolize the tools that assist in developing imagination, confidence, and critical thinking. The purpose of arts and crafts is not so much the end product for a preschooler, but the process—exploration and expression—which underpins cognitive, social, and emotional development.
Various innovative programmes have been adopted by some of the finest educational institutes in the country, like those under Apeejay Education. The innovative programs have introduced various art forms like finger painting, clay modelling, collage making, and role play on stories. Such activities allow free expression of young minds, which is very essential at an age when verbal skills are at a developing stage.
Education experts underline the role of arts in the development of early childhood skills. According to Ms Nidhi Ghai, Headmistress, Apeejay Rhythms Kinderworld, Jalandhar, fostering art and creativity is essential for encouraging self-expression in preschool.
“Through activities like drawing and crafting, children explore their imaginations and develop fine motor skills. These creative endeavours allow children to communicate their thoughts and emotions in unique ways, boosting their confidence and self-awareness. Collaborative art activities teach teamwork and cooperation, enhancing social skills. By providing a variety of materials and an open-ended approach, educators can create a supportive environment where children feel free to experiment and express themselves,” Ms Ghai opined.
Impact of Art on Social and Emotional Development
Arts and crafts offer preschoolers a channel for self-expression of their emotions, which is an important social development aspect. Supplies have to be shared or one big project worked on that requires cooperation to teach major social skills such as cooperation and respect toward ideas and space.

Parental and Community Involvement
Art education is supplemented in many ways by parents and the community. This can be in terms of simple art projects at home or community art fairs that further support the skills developed in school. It can also help bond with the community and create more outlets for children to express their creativity.
Technology in Art Education
This holds promise for the future and the new ways children can create and explore art digitally. Inventions such as this will continue to keep art education alive, relevant, and vibrant in the years of early childhood learning — very much at the forefront of learning — through the nourishment of the young learner’s creative spirit from the very beginning.
This holistic approach not only puts a premium on creativity but also guarantees that our youngest learners are equipped with the wherewithal to deal with and appreciate the vivid world that surrounds them.
