To make Mathematics more engaging, creative, and enjoyable for students, Apeejay School, Noida recently organised a unique interclass activity – Japanese Fan Making. The initiative aimed to enhance students’ understanding of mathematical concepts such as symmetry, types of angles, and spatial reasoning through hands-on, artistic learning.

Fostering collaboration and creativity

Held within the cheerful ambiance of the classrooms, the interclass event brought together students from different sections, promoting not just individual expression but also teamwork and healthy competition. Students worked in pairs or groups, sharing ideas, materials, and techniques to design their own colourful Japanese fans.

The activity encouraged them to step out of the typical theoretical framework and approach Mathematics with an open and imaginative mind. This blend of collaboration and creativity made learning a lively and enriching experience.

Learning through design

As students folded their paper and assembled their fans, they explored vital geometry concepts. They actively identified and applied various types of angles – acute, right, obtuse, reflex, straight, and full angles. In addition, the idea of line symmetry was clearly visible as they created balanced, mirror-like fan patterns.

Teachers guided them to observe the properties of shapes and angles in real-time, helping reinforce classroom learning with practical application. The arrangement of materials like coloured sheets, ice-cream sticks, and sketch pens required them to consider design balance, enhancing their spatial awareness.

A joyful and meaningful experience

The vibrant atmosphere was filled with laughter, curiosity, and a deep sense of accomplishment as students saw their artistic creations come to life. The activity sparked interest and showed them that Mathematics isn’t limited to numbers and formulas – it can be playful, visual, and full of surprises.

Teachers appreciated the initiative for its educational value and its role in boosting student confidence. Such integrated learning experiences are part of Apeejay School, Noida’s holistic approach to education – one that believes in nurturing both the analytical and creative sides of learners.

By turning mathematical concepts into something students could touch, fold, and see, the Japanese Fan Making activity truly succeeded in making Maths meaningful, memorable, and fun.
