In the ever-evolving landscape of education, the focus often tilts towards core subjects like Math, Science, and Liberal Arts. However, equally important are activities that nurture creativity, innovation, and personal expression. Art and craft activities often seen as supplementary or extracurricular, play a vital role in the holistic development of school students. These activities offer a myriad of benefits that extend beyond the classroom, fostering skills and attributes essential for personal and academic growth.

To help students get a little break from their usual studies and have a strong shift towards art, Apeejay School, Noida organised The Crafts Extravaganza for the students of classes VII & VIII.

The workshop was designed to emphasise the importance of creativity, environmental awareness, and sustainability. This year’s event was a resounding success, particularly for the class VII students who participated in various activities that combined artistic expression with ecological education.

The day began with an informative session where class VII students were briefed about the environmental impact of plastic bags and the numerous benefits of using paper bags. This introduction set the stage for the first hands-on activity, where students were guided through the process of making their paper bags.

Equipped with handmade sheets, they meticulously measured and cut the paper, carefully gluing the pieces together using glue. Handles were fashioned from strong string, ropes, or recycled materials, adding durability and an element of resourcefulness. The final touch was the decoration phase, where students showcased their creativity, transforming plain paper bags into personalised, eco-friendly creations.

Following the paper bag activity, students were introduced to various pot decorating techniques and the significance of plants in our environment. This segment not only highlighted the aesthetic aspect of crafting but also underscored the ecological importance of plants. Students selected their pots and began the intricate process of designing them using shilpkar clay.

With sculpture tools in hand, they carved out detailed patterns, bringing their pots to life. The final step involved colouring the pots, allowing students to achieve their desired artistic effects. Throughout the event, the emphasis remained on using eco-friendly materials and fostering an appreciation for the environment. The hands-on activities enabled students to explore their artistic talents while learning about the importance of sustainability.

The workshop not only nurtured the students’ creativity but also instilled in them a lasting commitment to environmental stewardship. By valuing and promoting such activities, educators can ensure that students receive a comprehensive education that prepares them for the complexities of the modern world.

Overall, the Craft extravaganza at Apeejay School, Noida, ended with a palpable sense of accomplishment and pride among the students. Each participant took home their handmade creations, serving as tangible reminders of their contributions to a greener future.
